The role of HBIG in real life for patients undergoing liver transplantation due to HDV-related cirrhosis

Successful clinical and virological outcomes of liver transplantation for HDV/HBV-related disease after long-term discontinuation of hepatitis B immunoglobulins

Summary: This study analyzed the long-term outcomes of 16 patients transplanted for HDV/HBV-related cirrhosis who discontinued HBIg after a median of 24.5 months. The results showed that monoprophylaxis with NA was effective in preventing HDV/HBV infection recurrence. In addition, 50% of the patients developed spontaneous serological immunity against HBV after HBIG discontinuation. Therefore, this study suggests the reconsideration of current prophylactic recommendations in this setting.

Treating hepatitis D with bulevirtide-Real-world experience from 114 patients

Summary: This study reported the safety and efficacy of bulevirtide in the treatment of chronic hepatitis D in a real-world setting in Germany. Among the 114 patients included, 87 cases showed virologic response and only a small proportion did not respond after 24 weeks of treatment. The treatment was well tolerated and showed signs of improvement in liver inflammation.

Summary: Hepatitis D, caused by the hepatitis D virus, is the most severe form of viral hepatitis in humans. Liver transplantation is currently the only therapeutic option for terminal HDV disease, but it is not accessible in poor countries. In high-income countries, hepatitis B virus vaccination has significantly reduced the prevalence of HDV infection, but there is still a demand for liver transplantation among aging cirrhotics who acquired hepatitis D decades ago.
