Flat band induced topological photonic Tamm states in stubbed structures: Theory and experiment

Soufyane Khattou et al.

Summary: We provide theoretical and experimental evidence for the existence of topological Tamm states at the interface between two stubbed photonic crystals (PCs). By analyzing the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and proposing a simple experimental platform, we demonstrate the existence and characteristics of these interface states. We also discuss the conditions for the existence of interface states and the robustness of topological bound states in the continuum.

Non-Hermitian chiral phononics through optomechanically induced squeezing

Javier del Pino et al.

Summary: By combining the controlled breaking of time-reversal symmetry with non-Hermitian dynamics, researchers have imposed chirality on phononic states, leading to unique symmetries and dynamics. Through time-modulated radiation pressure forces in nano-optomechanical networks, time-reversal symmetry is broken and chiral energy flow among mechanical resonators is observed. Furthermore, introducing non-conserving squeezing interactions, they observe a non-Hermitian Aharonov-Bohm effect and phononic amplification in ring-shaped networks, opening up new possibilities for exploring non-Hermitian topological bosonic phases and applications.

Gap solitons in a one-dimensional driven-dissipative topological lattice

Nicolas Pernet et al.

Summary: Drive engineering can stabilize new nonlinear phases in topological systems and establish dissipatively stabilized solitons as a powerful resource in topological photonics. The nonlinear response of a polariton lattice implementing the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model is studied, demonstrating the formation and robust nonlinear properties of topological gap solitons. Leveraging the driven-dissipative nature of the system, a class of bulk gap solitons with high sublattice polarization is discovered, providing an all-optical way to create non-trivial interfaces for Bogoliubov excitations.

Measurement-based preparation of multimode mechanical states

Chao Meng et al.

Summary: Nanomechanical resonators are important tools for studying quantum technology and macroscopic quantum physics. Preparing nonclassical states at room temperature is a challenge. This study demonstrates the preparation of a thermally squeezed mechanical state by breaking the symmetry between position and momentum using fast continuous measurement. Collective measurements on multiple mechanical modes are utilized to increase measurement speed and improve state preparation. The results suggest that existing technology can enable room temperature quantum squeezing through multimode conditioning. This work paves the way for quantum nanomechanical devices at room temperature and their applications in quantum technology and fundamental science.

Excitation and detection of acoustic phonons in nanoscale systems

Ryan C. Ng et al.

Summary: Phonons play a crucial role in the physical properties of materials, and their ability to affect the thermal, dielectric, and electronic properties of solid state systems has motivated extensive research in phononic structures. Although nanofabrication has allowed for structuring and confinement of phonons at the nanoscale, manipulating and characterizing phonons remain challenging. Nonetheless, understanding these processes could enable important applications in various fields when integrated with electronic and photonic devices.

Numerical simulations demonstrate the robustness of the Brillouin interaction between them and a set of engineering rules are deduced for different topological designs presenting colocalized states.

Electrically Driven Microcavity Exciton-Polariton Optomechanics at 20 GHz

Alexander S. Kuznetsov et al.

Summary: In this work, a novel platform based on the coupling of microcavity exciton polaritons and electrically driven super-high-frequency (SHF) longitudinal acoustic phonons is introduced for coherent SHF optomechanics. The platform leverages the long coherence time of polaritons and their efficient coupling to phonons, achieving huge modulation amplitudes and frequency products for phonon control and light-to-sound-to-rf conversion. The bidirectionality of the transducers and the large phonon frequencies enable phonon control with optical readout down to the single-particle regime at relatively high temperatures.
