This study uses a comprehensive dataset from Wallonia, Belgium to test the effectiveness of various pricing instruments over a 10-year period. The results show that price elasticities play a significant role in reducing residual waste, with weight-based pricing systems contributing substantially to waste reduction.

Summary: The economic and environmental impacts of the reverse logistics process of the waste disposal chain were studied in Xi an City, China. The financial costs per ton of food waste and residual waste were $46.35-$49.03 and $62.52-$88.84, respectively. The environmental impacts accounted for a high percentage in the entire waste management chains, with labor costs as the biggest financial expenditure and the fuel cycle of C&T vehicles as the major cause of environmental impacts. Source-separated waste management scenarios had more environmental benefits but poorer economic positions.

Summary: This study compared 30 days of thermophilic composting (TC) of food waste with seven days of black soldier fly (BSF) pretreatment followed by TC (BC). BC treatment was found to decrease protein-like substances and increase humus substances more quickly, resulting in a 21.6% shorter maturity time and 106.8% higher humification index compared to TC. Additionally, BC had significantly higher levels of total and available phosphorus, as well as higher richness and diversity of humus synthesis and phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB). The introduction of BSF gut bacteria contributed to a rapid humification process and phosphorus activation. These findings provide novel perspectives on food waste management.

Summary: The increasing generation of plastic waste globally is causing major concerns for public health and the environment, with China being the largest contributor. The current method of incineration for treating the increased plastic waste has negative environmental consequences. Pyrolysis has emerged as an environmentally friendly technique for energy and material recovery from plastic waste. This study evaluates the financial and ecological feasibility of power production from oil derived from pyrolysis of mixed plastic wastes in China from 2009 to 2028. The findings show a significant increase in plastic waste collected by 2028, with the potential to generate a substantial amount of oil for power production. The project is economically viable and profitable, with positive indicators such as net present value, profitability index, and return on investment. The life cycle assessment results reveal the project's positive impact on reducing global warming through the avoidance of coal combustion.

Summary: Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management is a global issue with increasing importance due to population growth, urbanization, and changing consumption patterns. This study presents a comprehensive framework to assess the sustainability of MSW management systems in Iran. By considering environmental and economic aspects, the eco-efficiency index is used to evaluate the systems' sustainability. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is applied to rank the systems based on their eco-efficiency indices, considering various parameters. The findings highlight the priority of landfill and anaerobic digestion systems with/without CHP, but also indicate limitations in data availability and assumptions made during the analysis.

Summary: Waste management aims to protect human health and the environment by reducing adverse impacts associated with waste generation and treatment. However, the performance of waste management systems is usually monitored based on recycling rates, rather than environmental impacts. This study introduces Environmental Waste Utilization (EWU) as an indicator to monitor the capability of waste management systems to reduce the adverse impacts of waste generation and management. The EWU Dashboard, a spreadsheet-based calculation tool, is used to operationalize EWU. Case studies on different types of waste are presented to demonstrate the applicability and advantages of EWU compared to material efficiency indicators. The study shows that EWU-based monitoring allows for identifying environmentally preferable waste management strategies and provides sound decision support.

Summary: This study proposes a poly-generation system (PGS) that integrates the pyrolysis, incineration, and anaerobic digestion processes to reduce the treatment cost of municipal solid waste (MSW) by utilizing internal supplies of auxiliary fuel and electricity. A mixed integer nonlinear programming approach is used to optimize the feed ratio and achieve supply-demand balance in the PGS. The results show that PGS can effectively reduce MSW treatment cost and improve resource utilization.
