Smoking Cessation Prevalence and Inequalities in the United States: 2014-2019

Adam M. Leventhal et al.

Summary: Although half of the US smokers attempted to quit smoking from 2014 to 2019, only a small percentage were able to sustain cessation, and most quit attempts did not involve the use of cessation treatments. There were pervasive sociodemographic inequalities in cessation, which did not correspond entirely to sociodemographic variation in motivation to quit. There was no improvement in smoking cessation prevalence and inequalities from 2014 to 2019.

A population-level analysis of changes in Australian smokers' preferences for smoking cessation support over two decades - from 1998 to 2017

Joanne Dono et al.

Summary: This study tracked long-term trends in quit attempt methods among Australian smokers over a period of 20 years. The findings revealed that while the number of quit attempts remained stable, unassisted quitting was still the most common method. Older individuals, smokers with higher nicotine dependence, socio-economically disadvantaged individuals, and those with mental health conditions were more likely to use supported cessation methods.
