Tuning the Optical Properties of ZnO by Co and Gd Doping for Water Pollutant Elimination

Kashif Safeen et al.

Summary: In this study, pure and doped ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized and characterized using various techniques. The inclusion of Co and Co/Gd in the ZnO lattice was confirmed by XRD analysis, while SEM images showed different morphologies of the nanoparticles. UV-Vis spectroscopy revealed increased absorption and a redshift in the doped samples. The bandgap decreased with doping, as observed in PL spectroscopy. The dielectric constant decreased and the electrical conductivity increased with Co and Co/Gd doping. VSM analysis showed ferromagnetic behavior in the doped samples. Moreover, Co/Gd-ZnO nanoparticles exhibited higher photocatalytic activity compared to ZnO nanoparticles.

Durability of Slippery Liquid-Infused Surfaces: Challenges and Advances

Divyansh Tripathi et al.

Summary: Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) are a unique approach to prevent fouling when in contact with aqueous media, organic fluids, or biological organisms. These surfaces consist of a liquid lubricant locked within the protrusions of a textured solid. Drops immiscible to the lubricant exhibit high mobility and low-contact-angle hysteresis on these surfaces. SLIPS have promising applications in anti-fouling surfaces, drag reduction, and fluid manipulation. However, lubricant depletion poses a challenge to the real-world application of SLIPS. This review focuses on enhancing the lubricant retention abilities of SLIPS and discusses the mechanisms responsible for lubricant depletion.

Investigations on structural, photoluminescent, and photometric properties of poly(vinyl alcohol)-capped Mn doped-ZnO nanoparticles for white light emission

Nguyen Thanh Phuong et al.

Summary: Luminescent Mn-doped ZnO nanoparticles and poly(vinyl alcohol) capped Mn-doped ZnO nanocomposite materials were successfully synthesized. The diffraction peaks of Mn-doped ZnO NPs were slightly shifted compared to undoped-ZnO NPs, while the nanocomposite showed a systematic shift of XRD peaks. The luminescent materials exhibited strong fluorescence in the visible wavelength range and near-infrared emission due to XRD peak shift and defect state transitions. These materials have potential applications in light-emitting devices.

Chemical vapour deposited ZnO nanowires for detecting ethanol and NO2

Eric Navarrete et al.

Summary: Different thicknesses of Au films were used in the growth of ZnO nanowires, with the 6 nm thick layers showing the most stable and repeatable gas sensing properties. Despite ZnO nanowires grown using the thickest Au layers reaching the highest responses under dry conditions, those grown using the thinnest Au film were more resilient at detecting NO2 in the presence of ambient moisture. The gas sensing results were discussed in light of defects and Au impurities in the ZnO nanowires, as revealed by characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy.

Tuning Contact Angles of Aqueous Droplets on Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Surfaces by Surfactants

Fabio Staniscia et al.

Summary: This study investigates the adsorption behavior of short-chained alcohols to water-vapor interfaces and solid surfaces with different polarities using molecular dynamics simulations. The researchers derive an equation for the adsorption coefficient, which shows exponential dependence on both molecular surface area and surface wetting coefficient. The findings suggest that the influence of surfactants on sessile droplets is strongest on highly hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces, while moderately hydrophilic surfaces are less affected.

Yttrium (Y) doped ZnO nanowire/p-Si heterojunction devices for efficient self-powered UV-sensing applications

Rajib Saha et al.

Summary: In this work, n-type Y-doped ZnO nanowires and p-type Si heterojunctions were fabricated using a two-step chemical bath deposition process. The doped nanowires were characterized extensively for their crystalline nature, morphology, and chemical composition, as well as the change in defect states due to Y incorporation. The results showed that the 1% Y-doped ZnO nanowires exhibited high UV/blue luminescence and low green luminescence, and the self-powered photoresponse of the nanowires/p-Si heterojunction under low power UV illumination was achieved with high responsivity and On/Off ratio.

The effects of sub-bandgap transitions and the defect density of states on the photocurrent response of a single ZnO-coated silica nanospring

Peter M. Wojcik et al.

Summary: This study investigates the electrical and optoelectronic properties of nanometer-sized ZnO structures, highlighting the significant influence of native point defects on these properties. By fabricating an electronic device to characterize the ZnO layer, it is found that the energy of excitation sources and the trapping of electrons and holes in defect levels within the bandgap have a major impact on the photocurrent characteristics. The paper provides physical models to describe the behavior of photocurrent under different excitation sources and proposes a phenomenological model to explain the dependence of saturation photocurrent on excitation intensity.

Exploring the Interrelation between Urbach Energy and Dielectric Constant in Hf-Substituted BaTiO3

Omkar Rambadey et al.

Summary: In this study, the variation of dielectric constant in Hf-substituted BaTiO3 was modeled considering electronic disorder with Urbach energy using a Bohr-like model. Optical absorption spectroscopy was used to estimate Urbach energy and band gap, showing a systematic scaling with Hf incorporation. Dielectric measurements revealed a decrease in dielectric constant with Hf substitution in the prepared samples, in line with the model predictions. The research contributes to understanding the relationship between optical and dielectric properties, demonstrating the decrease in dielectric constant with increasing disorder.
