Single-Crystal 2D Covalent Organic Frameworks for Plant Biotechnology

Song Wang et al.

Summary: Chemically synthesized molecules with a periodic two-dimensional framework, formed through covalent bonds, have high surface area and charge density, making them potential nanocarriers in life sciences. However, challenges remain in achieving biocompatibility and avoiding disordered linking during 2D polymerization. In this study, researchers establish thermodynamic and dynamic control over the polymerization process of biocompatible imine monomers, resulting in polycrystal, mesocrystal, and single-crystal covalent organic frameworks (COFs). The high-surface area COF nanoflakes obtained using exfoliation and minification methods show promise as plant cell nanocarriers that can deliver bioactive cargos into the cytoplasm of intact living plants.

Unveiling the Role of Additives in Modifying Crystallization Behaviors of 4-(Hydroxymethyl) Benzoic Acid

Xiaowei Cheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence mechanism of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) on the crystal morphology of 4-(hydroxymethyl) benzoic acid (p-HMBA) through experiments and molecular simulations. The results showed that PVP hindered the nucleation and growth of p-HMBA crystals, with a stronger inhibition effect on axial growth. Molecular simulations revealed that the hydrogen-bonding interaction between PVP and p-HMBA molecules inhibited the nucleation rate of the p-HMBA crystals.

Metal-organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks as disruptive membrane materials for energy-efficient gas separation

A. Knebel et al.

Summary: This critical Review discusses the molecular sieving behavior of metal-organic framework (MOF) and covalent organic framework (COF) membranes, which differs from classical zeolite membranes. MOFs and COFs offer synthetic access to a wide range of structures and tailor-made molecular gates. The controllable gas transport and compatibility with polymers make MOFs and COFs suitable for mixed-matrix membranes. The ability to react to stimuli allows for exploitation of the non-ideality of molecular sieving properties in a novel research direction.
