Growth-Promoting Endophytic Fungus (Stemphylium lycopersici) Ameliorates Salt Stress Tolerance in Maize by Balancing Ionic and Metabolic Status

Raid Ali et al.

Summary: The study showed that salt stress negatively impacted various aspects of maize growth, biochemistry, and ion content while also increasing antioxidant enzyme activities and certain secondary metabolites. However, the presence of endophytic fungus Stemphylium lycopersici helped mitigate the effects of salt stress, promoting antioxidant activities and nutrient uptake in maize plants. This highlights the potential of S. lycopersici as a natural salt stress reducer and growth promoter in crops, suggesting its use as a biofertilizer for improving salt stress tolerance and growth performance in saline regions.

Comparative transcriptome analyses of maize seedling root responses to salt stress

Xiaoxiang Zhang et al.

Summary: Salt stress affects crop yield by limiting growth and delaying development. Our study identified several DEGs enriched in the ABA signaling pathway common to both salt-tolerant and salt-sensitive maize lines, as well as specific DEGs induced in the salt-tolerant line, which may be responsible for high salt tolerance. Analysis showed that the period between 0 and 6 hours was crucial for the rapid response of tolerant genes under salt stress. These findings contribute to understanding the mechanism of salt response and provide references for functional gene revelation in plants.
