Climate Change Impact of Diverse Food Waste Valorization Processes beyond Anaerobic Digestion

Fan Lu et al.

Summary: The climate change impacts of six valorization scenarios for food waste were evaluated and compared with incineration and anaerobic digestion through a life cycle assessment. All six scenarios showed better climate change benefits than incineration, with the hydrolysis for the carbon source alternatives production coupled with thermal drying-RDF scenario and thermal drying-RDF scenario achieving the best and second-best climate change benefits. Sensitivity analysis revealed key parameters affecting the global warming potential results. This study provides valuable data and insights for decision-making regarding the utilization of food waste.

Towards circular plastics within planetary boundaries

Marvin Bachmann et al.

Summary: The rapid growth of plastics production worsens the triple crisis of habitat loss, plastic pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. Circular strategies to achieve net-zero GHG emissions have been proposed, but their implications for overall sustainability have not been studied on a global scale. This study links a comprehensive model of plastic production and end-of-life treatment to the planetary boundaries framework and finds that even a circular, climate-optimized plastics industry exceeds sustainability thresholds by up to four times. However, improving recycling technologies and rates, combined with biomass and CO2 utilization, can bring plastics into their safe operating space by 2030. Still, achieving absolute sustainability for plastics requires fundamental changes in production and use methods.

Yi Liu et al.

Summary: This study estimates the carbon emissions from municipal solid waste treatment across 30 Chinese provinces from 2011 to 2020. The results show that technological advances in waste treatment are the main driver of national carbon emissions reduction. Additionally, the impact of policies on carbon emissions changes is further analyzed using the LMDI-PDA model, considering socio-economic factors. The methods and results of this study can provide better decision-making support for national and provincial carbon emissions control policies targeting MSW treatment.

Environmental Consequences of Potential Strategies for China to Prepare for Natural Gas Import Disruptions

Yue Qin et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impacts of planning strategies to prepare for potentially fully disrupted natural gas imports in China, finding that compensating for gas import disruptions with domestic fossil fuels could lead to excess premature deaths, increased carbon emissions, and aggravated water stress. Improving energy efficiency, electrification, cleaner combustion, and expanding gas storage capacity can significantly reduce premature deaths and negative carbon and water impacts simultaneously.

Potential for future reductions of global GHG and air pollutants from circular waste management systems

Adriana Gomez-Sanabria et al.

Summary: Based on the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways, a global systematic approach is developed to evaluate the potential reduction of greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions through circular municipal waste management systems. The study contrasts two sets of global scenarios and finds that a sustainability-oriented mitigation strategy produces earlier and larger co-benefits compared to scenarios focused solely on technical solutions. The findings indicate that the sustainability-oriented scenario can eliminate ambient air pollution from open burning entirely before 2050, while still having 386 Tg CO2eq/yr of GHG (CH4 and CO2) to be released.

Analysis of factors influencing residents' waste sorting behavior: A case study of Shanghai

Kannan Govindan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the factors influencing residents' waste sorting behavior based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB). The research model was built and tested using a survey of 324 residents in Shanghai. The results show that attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control are positively related to residents' waste sorting intention, and sorting behavior is influenced by intention. Additionally, the study suggests that infrastructure, economic incentive, and assistance & supervision have a positive moderating effect on the relationship between intention and behavior. This research enhances our understanding of waste sorting behavior and contributes to the improvement of TPB. The findings from Shanghai provide valuable insights for promoting waste sorting among residents in other municipalities.

A review of bioplastics at end-of-life: Linking experimental biodegradation studies and life cycle impact assessments

Elisabeth C. A. Van Roijen et al.

Summary: This review examines the life cycle assessments and biodegradation studies of common bioplastics. The excessive production and disposal of plastics, fueled by a growing single-use consumer base, have led to substantial environmental impacts. The study highlights the limited understanding of waste management practices for bioplastics and identifies research gaps and sources of uncertainty. The findings underscore the need for further research on the potential circularity of these bioplastics.

Life cycle GHG emissions of MSW landfilling versus Incineration: Expected outcomes based on US landfill gas collection regulations

Malak Anshassi et al.

Summary: Most LCA studies find MSWI to be preferred over landfilling from a GHG perspective due to high energy recovery offsets. However, there are cases where landfilling results in less GHG emissions. This study investigates the landfill gas collection efficiencies and waste composition that lead to such results, and explores the theoretical minimum lifetime gas collection efficiencies expected under US LFG regulations. The results show that only landfills with high LFG collection efficiencies and methane energy recovery can result in less GHG emissions compared to MSWI, and the required efficiency increases without LFG energy recovery. The study also models the expected theoretical lifetime LFG collection efficiencies and identifies the conditions under which a landfill can achieve such high efficiencies. The influence of factors such as oxidation rates, decay rates, electricity grids, and nonferrous metals recovery offsets on the collection efficiency range is explored, with electricity grids and nonferrous metals offsets having the greatest influence.

Summary: The systematic review of scientific LCA studies on waste to energy technologies showed that different WtE technologies can have varying impacts on different environmental impact categories. For instance, anaerobic digestion was found to minimize environmental consequences in most aspects when dealing with organic wastes, except for ecotoxicity and human toxicity categories. Additionally, the preference of incineration over landfilling for municipal solid waste treatment was generally agreed upon in the results. Sensitivity analysis revealed that assumptions in substitution of WtE products are the primary source of uncertainty.
