Design of a hydro sound intensity probe for quantification and localization of acoustic sources - Applied to a hubless marine rim drive

Matthias Witte et al.

Summary: The reduction of hydro noise emission is crucial due to the increase in background noise levels in the oceans. Ship propulsion systems, including propellers, engines, inverters, and gearboxes, need acoustical improvement. Unlike airborne noise, hydro acoustic measurements are limited, and this paper presents a new three-dimensional hydro sound intensity probe for quantification and localization of noise sources. The probe can determine hydro sound pressure, 3D sound intensity vector, and sound power, and it can also be used for hydro sound source localization through beamforming methods. The probe was used to investigate hydro acoustic emissions of a marine rim drive in Germany, demonstrating different hydro sound generation mechanisms.

Multi-Parameter Optimization Analysis of Hydrodynamic Performance for Rim-Driven Thruster

Yuanzhe Nie et al.

Summary: This study proposes a multi-parameter collaborative optimization framework based on the response surface method (RSM) to improve the efficiency of rim-driven thrusters (RDT). The common structural parameters of RDT, including pitch ratio, disk ratio, and rake angle, are selected as design variables. The Box-Behnken experimental design combined with CFD calculations is used to obtain simulation data. A response surface second-order model is employed to evaluate the extent to which different parameters can affect the target variable and optimize the hydraulic efficiency of RDT. The results show significant improvements in efficiency and flow characteristics compared to the prototype RDT.

2D-3C PIV measurement of the near wake of a ducted propeller

Jie Gong et al.

Summary: The wake dynamics of the ducted propeller were analyzed using underwater stereo particle image velocimetry (SPIV) measurements. The results showed that the duct accelerates the evolution process of the propeller wake and generates specific flow structures in the wake.

CFD-based multi-objective optimization of the duct for a rim-driven thruster

Shuo Zhai et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the calculation method and design optimization framework for the rim-driven thruster (RDT), and evaluates and optimizes its performance through parametric reconstruction and fitting models. Sensitivity analysis results show that the nozzle size and internal nozzle profile have a significant impact on the optimization objectives. The effectiveness of duct optimization is verified through CFD calculations.

CFD prediction of full-scale ship parametric roll in head wave

Liwei Liu et al.

Summary: With the advancement of brute-force computing power, parallel computations such as overset grid technology and meta-modeling are expected to pave the way for the widespread application of full-scale computations. In this study, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) prediction of a full-scale ship parametric roll in a regular head wave was conducted using an in-house unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) CFD code. The results demonstrate that the URANS code could accurately capture the details of parametric roll phenomenon in head waves, indicating its potential for predicting parametric roll characteristics for full-scale ships at the design stage in the future.

Propeller-duct interaction on the wake dynamics of a ducted propeller

Jie Gong et al.

Summary: The study focuses on investigating the wake dynamics of a ducted propeller using detached eddy simulations, revealing the impacts of blade-blade interference and blade-duct interaction on loading stability and efficiency. Short-wave instability governs the wake, with multi-induction effects and duct characteristics influencing the tip vortex system differently.
