Magnetization Slow Dynamics in Mononuclear Co(II) Field-Induced Single-Molecule Magnet

Nikoleta Malinova et al.

Summary: The synthesis of a mononuclear Co(II) complex 1 using a novel tridentate ligand L was investigated. The molecular structure of complex 1 was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray structural analysis and noncovalent contacts were examined. The magnetic properties of complex 1 were analyzed using the Griffith-Figgis Hamiltonian, and calculations and spectroscopic study showed good agreement. The AC magnetic investigation revealed slow relaxation of magnetization in complex 1 with involvement of direct, Raman, and Orbach processes.

Understanding the unceasing evolution of Co(II) based single-ion magnets

Pradip Kumar Sahu et al.

Summary: Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are molecules that exhibit slow relaxation of magnetization and have potential applications in information storage and quantum computing. To make them practical, high blocking temperature and effective energy for magnetization reversal are required. Enhancing magnetic anisotropy can reduce quantum tunneling of magnetization. Among transition metal ions, Co(II) is a superior choice for designing single-ion magnets.

Ultrahard magnetism from mixed-valence dilanthanide complexes with metal-metal bonding

Colin A. Gould et al.

Summary: Mixed-valence dilanthanide complexes with a singly occupied lanthanide-lanthanide sigma-bonding orbital were reported, showing outstanding magnetic properties due to the strong alignment of the sigma-bonding and f electrons on both lanthanides. The combination of a well-isolated high-spin ground state and large magnetic anisotropy in (Cp-iPr5)(2)Dy2I3 results in an enormous coercive magnetic field at high temperatures.

Jana Jurakova et al.

Summary: Four pentacoordinate complexes have been synthesized and their structures determined. The magnetic properties of the compounds were investigated, and the relationship between geometry and orbital ordering was discussed. Theoretical calculations were in good agreement with experimental data. Wet lithographic technique was used to evaluate the processability of the complexes and the preparation of microstructured films.

Co(II) single-ion magnets: synthesis, structure, and magnetic properties

Jana Jurakova et al.

Summary: This paper introduces Magnetoactive coordination compounds that exhibit bi- or multistability and serve as molecular switches. Specifically, it focuses on single molecule magnets (SMMs) that show slow relaxation of magnetization based on purely molecular origin. Unlike ferromagnets, SMMs do not require intermolecular interactions for their magnetic bistability, making them attractive for high-density data storage. The paper provides an overview of Co(II) SMMs, emphasizing the relationship between structural features, magnetic anisotropy, and slow relaxation of magnetization in tetra-, penta-, and hexacoordinate complexes.

Single-Ion Magnets with Giant Magnetic Anisotropy and Zero-Field Splitting

Miroslav Georgiev et al.

Summary: The design of mononuclear molecular nanomagnets with a large energy barrier for magnetization reversal has attracted a lot of interest for their potential technological applications. In particular, single ion magnets are of particular attraction due to their rich quantum behavior and distinct fine structure. This review comprehensively presents the latest research progress in the field of single-ion magnets with notable magnetization-reversal barriers, slow magnetic relaxation, and high blocking temperatures. The achievements in the synthesis of 3d and 4f single-ion magnets over the past two decades are discussed, along with the magnetostructural properties underlying the anisotropy behavior and resulting remanence. Furthermore, the fundamental theoretical aspects, such as zero-field splitting, anisotropy energy, and quantum tunneling of magnetization, are highlighted to shed light on the complex behavior of these nanosized magnetic entities.

Reaching the Maximal Unquenched Orbital Angular Momentum L=3 in Mononuclear Transition-Metal Complexes: Where, When and How?

Vladimir S. Mironov

Summary: This study examines the conditions for achieving maximal unquenched orbital angular momentum and highest magnetic anisotropy in 3d complexes with axial coordination symmetry using ligand field theory. It shows that, besides the known linear two-coordinate 3d(7) complex, other types of complexes can also achieve maximal orbital angular momentum. However, their single-molecule magnet performance is unlikely to compete with the record linear complex.

Summary: The article presents a dysprosium complex that is chemically designed to exhibit strong easy-axis type magnetic anisotropy preserved in dichloromethane solution at room temperature. The detailed theoretical and experimental studies explain the typical features of highly performant single molecule magnets (SMMs). The NMR characterization shows remarkably large chemical shifts, outperforming the current state-of-the-art pseudocontact shift (PCS) tags.

Single-Molecule Magnets: From Mn12-ac to dysprosium metallocenes, a travel in time

Andoni Zabala-Lekuona et al.

Summary: The discovery of Single-Molecule Magnets in 1993 revolutionized the field of information storage by shrinking the size of bits to molecular levels. Despite initially operating at temperatures near absolute zero, collaboration between chemists and physicists have led to the development of materials that can operate above liquid nitrogen temperatures. The evolution of SMMs has involved the study of various routes towards high performance materials, with each route essential for understanding the quantum dynamics behind these molecules.
