Histone Modification Landscapes as a Roadmap for Malaria Parasite Development

J. Connacher et al.

Summary: This article provides an update on recent epigenetic research on malaria parasites, specifically focusing on the role of dynamic histone post-translational modification (PTM) landscapes in orchestrating the development and differentiation pathways in Plasmodium falciparum parasites. The study highlights the functional importance of combinatorial PTMs and the remaining gaps in our understanding of histone modification landscapes.

Erythropoiesis and Malaria, a Multifaceted Interplay

Aurelie Dumarchey et al.

Summary: In addition to hemolysis and splenic clearance, abnormal erythropoiesis is observed in malaria patients and may contribute to anemia. The interaction between inadequate erythropoiesis and Plasmodium parasite infection in the bone marrow has been poorly studied, but recent findings offer new insights.

Postulated Process of Axoneme Organization in the Male Gametogenesis of Malaria Parasite Plasmodium berghei

Miyoko Kubodrie-Irie et al.

Summary: The ultrastructure of axoneme organization in microgametes of Plasmodium berghei was investigated, revealing the presence of singlet microtubules embedded in electron dense masses in the kinetosomes, as well as incomplete doublets with growing B-tubules. The self-assembly of microtubular components proceeded stepwise from singlet MTs to form the complete axoneme in a short time. Additionally, at exflagellation, extra doublets were occasionally observed between the axoneme and the flagellar membrane, and the outer dynein arm of the microgamete had a pistol-like shape.

A single-cell atlas of Plasmodium falciparum transmission through the mosquito

Eliana Real et al.

Summary: The study utilized single-cell transcriptomics to elucidate gene usage across different stages of the transmission cycle of Plasmodium falciparum, highlighting developmental trajectories in the mosquito and identifying both conserved and non-conserved gene usage between human and rodent parasites. These findings provide a detailed atlas for intensive investigation of the transcriptional journey of P. falciparum and potential drug and vaccine targets for malaria prevention.
