On-Demand Maneuvering of Diverse Prodrug Liquids on a Light-Responsive Candle-Soot-Hybridized Lubricant-Infused Slippery Surface for Highly Effective Toxicity Screening

Shuneng Zhou et al.

Summary: The study presents a light-responsive candle-soothybridized lubricant-infused slippery surface (CS-LISS) for highly effective and flexible drug HTS. By utilizing near-infrared irradiation and self-cleaning capabilities, the CS-LISS enables rapid fusion and directional steering of droplets in drug screening. Integrated with a GFP HeLa cell chip, it achieves high-efficiency drug toxicity screening.

Tuning the Ferroelectric Phase Transition of P(VDF-TrFE) through a Simple Approach of Modification by Introducing Double Bonds

Honghong Gong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of a double bond (DB) on the electroactive properties of P(VDF-TrFE) polymers. The introduction of the DB partially destroys the crystalline phase of P(VDF-TrFE) and greatly improves the molecular chain flexibility of the resulting P(VDF-TrFE-DB). As a result, P(VDF-TrFE-DB) exhibits a larger electric displacement while requiring a lower driving electric field.

Light-induced charged slippery surfaces

Fang Wang et al.

Summary: Slippery lubricant-infused porous (SLIPS) and superhydrophobic surfaces have emerged as promising interfacial materials. We developed a class of slippery material that harnesses the dual advantages of both solid and lubricant by constructing a photothermal-responsive composite matrix with real-time light-induced surface charge regeneration capability. The resulting light-induced charged slippery surface (LICS) allows for photocontrol of droplets with fast speed, long distance, antigravity motion, and directionally collective motion. The LICS is further extended to biomedical domains for specific morphological hydrogel bead formation and biological diagnosis and analysis.

Active Manipulation of Functional Droplets on Slippery Surface

Keyu Han et al.

Summary: This study reports a strategy for actively manipulating functional droplets by propelling them on a nonresponsive slippery surface without the need for surface responsiveness. The experiments demonstrate the ability to coalesce droplets, perform micro reactions, manipulate anti-gravity forces, and screen different droplets under external stimuli. This work is of significant importance for the development of chemical detection, microfluidics, bioanalysis, and medicines.

Human Brain Organoids-on-Chip: Advances, Challenges, and Perspectives for Preclinical Applications

Heloise Castiglione et al.

Summary: There is an urgent need for predictive in vitro models to improve disease modeling and drug target identification and validation, especially for neurological disorders. Cerebral organoids, as alternative methods to in vivo studies, have the ability to recapitulate many features of the human brain and are considered powerful tools to decipher complex biological processes. Combining these innovative models with microfluidic technologies, referred to as brain organoids-on-chips, allows us to model the microenvironment of several neuronal cell types in 3D, opening new avenues for preclinical applications in neuroscience.

Designing Hydrogels for 3D Cell Culture Using Dynamic Covalent Crosslinking

Muhammad Rizwan et al.

Summary: Designing simple biomaterials to replicate tissue properties is challenging in tissue engineering. Current biomaterials mainly provide macroscopic tunability of scaffold mechanics and do not reflect the dynamic nature of the natural extracellular microenvironment. There are opportunities to investigate cells capable of locally remodeling matrices for more complex applications.
