LiAlS2: A promising infrared frequency-conversion material with ultrawide band gap and high laser-induced damage threshold

Guangmao Li et al.

Summary: The comprehensive optical properties of LiAlS2 were studied, and it was found to exhibit congruently melting feature, type-I phase matching performance, and second-harmonic generation response. LiAlS2 has the widest band gap and the highest laser-induced damage threshold among the selected IR NLO materials. Summary: We propose a method for efficient screening of over 140,000 materials to explore novel infrared nonlinear optical (NLO) materials with high thermal conductivity and wide band gap, which are crucial for practical applications in solid-state lasers. Through our screening method, 106 compounds with desired band gaps, NLO coefficients, and thermal conductivity are identified, including the synthesis of Sr2SnS4 to verify the reliability of our process. This strategy provides a powerful tool for searching NLO compounds with high thermal conductivity.

Chain-like [Sx] (x=2-6) Units Realizing Giant Birefringence with Transparency in the Near-Infrared for Optoelectronic Materials

Guangmao Li et al.

Summary: In this article, it is proposed that linear or chain-like [S-x] (x=2-6) materials are the origin of large birefringence and can be regarded as the genes of birefringence. The metal polysulfide family is first proposed as a rich source of birefringent materials, among which Cs2S6 exhibits giant birefringence of 0.58@1064 nm and a wide band gap of 1.70 eV. In addition, the first dual-anion group polysulfide Na4Ba3(S-2)(4)S-3 is obtained, showing wide infrared transmission range (0.5-6.2 μm), wide band gap (2.3 eV), and large birefringence (0.37 at 1064 nm). This work provides a new guiding thought for exploring large birefringence crystals in the future.

HgB2S4: A d 10 Metal Thioborate with Giant Birefringence and Wide Band Gap

Yi Huang et al.

Summary: In this work, the capability of planar [B3S6] to generate large birefringence was theoretically studied for the first time. The first d (10) metal thioborate HgB2S4 (HBS) was successfully synthesized, which was composed of the pi-conjugated [B3S6] and [HgS2] units. HBS showed great potential as an infrared birefringent material due to its large birefringence, wide band gap, and wide transparent window. The structure-performance analysis revealed that the pi-conjugated [B3S6] units were the main contributor to birefringence and could be used for designing IR birefringent materials. This research will have a direct impact on the design of high-performance birefringent crystals in the future.

Achieving the full-wavelength phase-matching for efficient nonlinear optical frequency conversion in C(NH2)3BF4

Miriding Mutailipu et al.

Summary: Researchers propose a full-wavelength phase-matching crystal that can avoid phase-mismatching throughout its entire optical transparency range. The anisotropic bonding strength in the energy dimension is confirmed to be the key to achieve this ability. They demonstrate a guanidinium tetrafluoroborate crystal that can be phase-matched over its entire optical transparency range, generating harmonic light as short as 193.2 nm. This work lays the foundation for finding a new class of crystals with full-wavelength phase-matching and provides a high-performance crystal for generating 266 nm light.

Theoretical Prediction-Assisted Synthesis and Characterization of Infrared Nonlinear Optical Material NaSrBS3

Yihan Yun et al.

Summary: NaSrBS3, the first noncentrosymmetric alkali and alkaline earth metal mixed thioborate with [BS3] as building units, has been successfully synthesized based on theoretical prediction. Comprehensive characterizations reveal its wide bandgap (3.94 eV), large birefringence (0.185 at 1064 nm), high laser-induced damage threshold (9 x AGS), and suitable phase-matching SHG response (0.3 x AGS). The [BS3] units significantly influence the bandgap, birefringence, and SHG response. This work represents the first successful case of predicting and synthesizing infrared NLO crystals in the thioborate system, providing insights for SHG material design.

Improved Birefringence Activated by Tetrahedra Decorated with a Single Linear Unit

Wenlong Xie et al.

Summary: Performance enhancement through structural modification has always been a goal in the field of materials science. Providing direct evidence to prove the effectiveness of a strategy is challenging but necessary. This study proposes a tetrahedra-decoration strategy to significantly improve birefringent performance by decorating the tetrahedra with a single linear [S-2] unit. The strategy is verified through comprehensive characterization of two thiogermanates, K2BaGeS4 and K2BaGeS5, which have the same crystal structure, unit cells, and unit arrangements. Theoretical characterization confirms that the [GeS5] group has much larger polarization anisotropy than [GeS4], further demonstrating that the linear [S-2] unit leads to the sharp increase in birefringence of K2BaGeS5 (0.19 vs 0.03 of K2BaGeS4). This work provides a new approach to improving birefringent performance.

From BPS4 to AB3P2S10 (A = Na, K): cations inducing dimension reduction and bandgap enlargement

Yi Huang et al.

Summary: Regulating the performances of optical materials and enriching the structural chemistry of solid-state inorganic crystals can be achieved by controlling the crystal structure using cations. In this work, the synthesis, structural revolution, and bandgap adjustment of boron-thiophosphate BPS4 (BPS) were studied by introducing Na+ and K+ ions. The obtained quaternary boron-thiophosphates, AB(3)P(2)S(10) (A = Na, K) (ABPS), showed a decreased anion skeleton dimension and improved bandgap compared to BPS. Structural studies and theoretical analyses revealed that the introduction of cations separated the infinite chains, localized the electrons, and widened the bandgaps. This work enriches the structural chemistry of boron-thiophosphates and demonstrates the effect of ionic bonds on the optical properties.
