First report of acanthocephalan parasite, Longicollum pagrosomi Yamaguti, 1935 in cultured red snapper (Lutjanus erythropterus) in Taiwan

Li-Wu Cheng et al.

Summary: This study provides a detailed characterization of Longicollum pagrosomi, an acanthocephalan parasite found in farmed red snapper in Taiwan. The study examines the morphological, histopathological, and molecular features of the parasite and confirms its identity through phylogenetic analysis. The findings reveal the clinical signs and pathological effects of the parasite on the fish.

The erection of a new genus, Neotegorhynchus n. g. (Palaeacanthocephala, Illiosentidae), with a redescription of Neotegorhynchus cyprini n. comb. from Cyprinus carpio from the Yangtze River basin, China

O. L. G. A. LISITSYNA et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes the acanthocephalan parasites belonging to the family Illiosentidae Golvan, 1960, found in the intestine of common carp from Taihu Lake in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, China. A new acanthocephalan genus, Neotegorhynchus n. g., was identified in this study.

First morphological and molecular characterization of cystacanths of Corynosoma evae Zdzitowiecki, 1984 (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae) from Antarctic teleost fishes

Jesus S. Hernandez-Orts et al.

Summary: This study examined and redescribed the cystacanths of the polymorphid acanthocephalan Corynosoma evae from teleost fishes in West Antarctica. The study confirmed the validity of C. evae, but also found significant morphological variability in taxonomically important characteristics. Additionally, new molecular data was provided for C. evae, placing it as a sister lineage to two related species. Finally, the study confirmed the validity of C. arctocephali from pinnipeds in the subantarctic and Antarctic regions.

Morphology, molecular characterization and phylogeny of Bolbosoma nipponicum Yamaguti, 1939 (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae), a potential zoonotic parasite of human acanthocephaliasis

Si-Si Ru et al.

Summary: In this study, the juveniles of Bolbosoma nipponicum collected from northern fur seals in Alaska were identified and studied. Molecular characterization and phylogenetic analyses were performed to understand the relationships of Bolbosoma with other genera in the family Polymorphidae. The results revealed potential host-switch patterns during the evolution of polymorphid acanthocephalans.

Mitochondrial phylogenomics of Acanthocephala: nucleotide alignments produce long-branch attraction artefacts

Jin-Wei Gao et al.

Summary: This study provides the first molecular data for the genus Micracanthorhynchina by sequencing its mitochondrial genome. The results demonstrate the importance of attenuating compositional heterogeneity-driven long-branch attraction artifacts when using mitochondrial genomic data to resolve the phylogeny of Acanthocephala.

Molecular and morphological characterization of Bolbosoma balaenae (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae), a neglected intestinal parasite of the fin whale Balaenoptera physalus

Mario Santoro et al.

Summary: In this study, the parasite Bolbosoma balaenae was discovered for the first time in a fin whale stranded in the Mediterranean Sea, with new structural characteristics and molecular data described. The research provides a better understanding of this poorly known parasite through taxonomic, molecular, and phylogenetic analysis.

Redescription and molecular analysis of Pallisentis (Pallisentis) nandai Sarkar, 1953 (Acanthocephala: Quadrigyridae) in India

O. M. Amin et al.

Summary: Pallisentis nandai is a freshwater fish parasite found in the Ganga River and its tributaries in the Indian subcontinent. Detailed descriptions and analyses of its morphology and molecular characteristics were provided, including new insights into its taxonomic position within the Eoacanthocephala, family Quadrigyridae. This study represents the first molecular evidence-based report on P. nandai.
