Around the world in electrochemistry: a review of the electrochemistry curriculum in high schools

Kristy L. Turner et al.

Summary: Electrochemistry education is crucial for future researchers and citizens to achieve decarbonisation and net zero targets. This paper provides an overview of electrochemistry in school education by utilizing curriculum documents, assessments, and literature insights. The study found that electrochemistry is extensively included in high school curricula, with variability depending on specialization. Contexts such as galvanic and electrolytic cells, electrolysis, and analysis are used to illustrate key ideas. However, low teacher confidence and misconceptions from published resources undermine the effectiveness of the taught curriculum.

A laboratory experiment for science courses: Sedimentary microbial fuel cells

Martin Pergola et al.

Summary: There is a growing concern about enhancing the quality of education by incorporating interdisciplinary approaches and integrating concepts in scientific disciplines. The utilization of microbial fuel cells as an alternative source of renewable energy presents undergraduate students with an opportunity to integrate interdisciplinary concepts into a globally recognized topic. We describe a laboratory experiment implemented in a third-year undergraduate biology course, where students gained hands-on experience in assembling microbial fuel cells and comprehended their functioning. This approach enabled them to integrate concepts from biology, biochemistry, and electricity. Furthermore, the acquisition of practical skills and decision-making in experimental design are crucial for the development of future professionals.

Reinvigorating electrochemistry education

Paul A. Kempler et al.

Summary: Electrochemistry is a mature discipline with diverse applications, however, training of electrochemists in academic institutions in the United States is generally lacking. Teaching inherently interdisciplinary electrochemical concepts poses challenges, but technology provides new tools for teaching. By combining new tools and approaches, scientists and engineers can be better prepared for careers in electrochemical technology to accelerate the development and deployment of clean energy technology in the future.
