Gestural Embodiment of Intensifiers in Iconic, Metaphoric, and Beat Gestures

Omid Khatin-Zadeh et al.

Summary: The study investigated how intensifiers are embodied in iconic and metaphoric gestures when used with literal and metaphorical statements. Persian native speakers were asked to listen to Persian stories and retell them. The results showed a higher use of iconic or beat gestures when an intensifier was used with a literal sentence and a higher use of metaphoric or beat gestures when an intensifier was used with a metaphoric sentence. This suggests that intensifiers strengthen mental simulation and embodiment of objects, ideas, or situations.
