Design of a modular and compliant wrist module for upper limb prosthetics

Andrea Demofonti et al.

Summary: In the development of advanced polyarticulated prosthetic hands, prosthetic wrists have been less focused on. However, increasing the dexterity of the wrist is important for improving handling skills. This study introduces a novel prosthetic wrist module with active pronation/supination and passive elastic flexion/extension, which can be included in hand prostheses for a more natural motion.

Active upper limb prostheses: a review on current state and upcoming breakthroughs

Andrea Marinelli et al.

Summary: The journey of prosthetic users with bionic hand is examined in terms of opportunities and limitations, highlighting the importance of functional and embodied limb experience to promote device usage. In this review, the focus is on the current challenges and potential innovations in upper limb prosthetic devices, including input and feedback sources, signal analysis algorithms, and user-centered design strategies for technology acceptance and human-machine integration through co-adaptive processes. The paper aims to provide researchers, designers, developers, clinicians, industrial stakeholders, and end-users with an overview of the state-of-the-art and encourage interdisciplinary efforts to improve bionic hand design for solving current issues in upper limb prostheses.

Multichannel haptic feedback unlocks prosthetic hand dexterity

Moaed A. Abd et al.

Summary: This paper investigates whether individuals can control the grip forces applied to two different objects simultaneously with a dexterous artificial hand, using a novel multichannel wearable soft robotic armband to convey artificial sensations of touch. The results demonstrate that subjects were able to successfully grasp and transport two objects simultaneously, even when their vision was obstructed. Simultaneous transport of objects proves to be a time-saving approach compared to sequential transport.

Prediction of anatomically and biomechanically feasible precision grip posture of the human hand based on minimization of muscle effort

Takayuki Nakajima et al.

Summary: We have developed a method that estimates a biomechanically feasible precision grip posture of the human hand for different objects by minimizing muscle effort. The calculated hand posture, fingertip forces, and muscle activation signals are in good agreement with the measured data, indicating the effectiveness of this method for virtual ergonomic assessment of handheld products.

Design of a 3D-printed hand prosthesis featuring articulated bio-inspired fingers

Juan Sebastian Cuellar et al.

Summary: A bio-inspired approach was applied to design and fabricate a new type of body-powered hand prosthesis, with a focus on studying the biological structure of human fingers, evaluating mechanical performance, and using various polymeric materials in the fabrication of prototypes. The prosthetic hand demonstrates adaptive grasping, articulated fingers, and minimized post-printing assembly, making it a cost-effective option for locations without advanced prosthetic workshops.

Comparison between rigid and soft poly-articulated prosthetic hands in non-expert myo-electric users shows advantages of soft robotics

Patricia Capsi-Morales et al.

Summary: Despite the advancements in modern bionic and prosthetic hands, commercial devices have limited acceptance and usage rates. While rigid hands offer precise grasp, soft properties provide higher functionality, adaptability, intuitive use, and more natural execution of daily activities. This study suggests that soft robotic technologies could promote quick integration in non-expert users.
