A semi-empirical approach for estimating the lateral earth pressure on rigid retaining walls with EPS inclusions in cohesionless soils

Zhong Han et al.

Summary: Placing EPS as inclusions between the rigid nonyielding wall and fill can effectively alleviate the lateral load and enable cost-effective designs. A semi-empirical approach is developed to predict the lateral earth pressure on rigid retaining walls with EPS inclusions. The study provides suggestions for the use of EPS inclusions in cohesionless soils.

Reliability evaluation for cantilevered retaining walls considering uncertainty of mainshock-aftershock sequences

Yang Zhou et al.

Summary: This paper presents a method for the probabilistic analysis and reliability evaluation of retaining walls. It examines the stochastic dynamic response of rigid cantilever retaining walls subjected to mainshock-aftershock sequences. A variable generation strategy and copula function are used to establish the correlation between mainshocks and aftershocks. The direct probability integral method (DPIM) is utilized to estimate the reliability of the retaining wall under stochastic seismic sequences. The results show that dynamic reliability of different physical quantities can be obtained without assuming their probability distribution. The study also demonstrates that the reliability of the retaining walls is degraded by aftershocks, with the degree of degradation increasing with higher design requirements.

Pseudo-static analysis of reinforced earth retaining walls

H. Alhajj Chehade et al.

Summary: This paper examines the seismic behavior of earth retaining walls using the upper bound theorem of limit analysis and discretization technique, with pseudo-static approach to model seismic effects. The extended methodology proposed is validated against conventional limit analysis results and a parametric study is conducted to identify the effects of key parameters on required reinforcement strength.

Seismic analysis of 3D active earth pressure for unsaturated backfill

X. L. Yang et al.

Summary: A new procedure is proposed to evaluate active earth pressure in 3D unsaturated backfills subjected to earthquake vibration through upper bound analysis. The impact of water tables on soil-wall stability is indirectly considered, with parametric studies investigating various influences on the retaining wall. The explicit expression of seismic active earth pressure is derived by energy dissipation principle, showing good agreement with previous literature.
