Co-infection of intestinal helminths in humans and animals in the Philippines

Olumayowa T. Kajero et al.

Summary: This study assessed the associations between soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections, including Ascaris, Trichuris, hookworm, strongyle, and Toxocara, in human and animal hosts in the Philippines. The results showed that there were associations between different parasite species, possibly due to shared exposures and transmission routes. Co-infections were more common in animals than in humans, which could have implications for disease severity.

Estimating the population at risk with soil transmitted helminthiasis and annual drug requirements for preventive chemotherapy in Ogun State, Nigeria

Hammed Oladeji Mogaji et al.

Summary: This study used statistical modelling to create predictive risk maps for soil transmitted helminth (STH) infections in Ogun state, Nigeria. It estimated the number of people infected and the amount of drugs needed for preventive chemotherapy. The results provide important information for policy-making and intervention strategies to eliminate STH infections.

Reduction in DALYs lost due to soil-transmitted helminthiases and schistosomiasis from 2000 to 2019 is parallel to the increase in coverage of the global control programmes

Antonio Montresor et al.

Summary: Preventive chemotherapy interventions for soil-transmitted helminthiases and schistosomiasis have significantly reduced the number of disability-adjusted life years lost in the past 19 years. Deworming is considered one of the most cost-effective public health interventions due to its low cost and high impact.

Opisthorchis viverrini and Strongyloides stercoralis mono- and co-infections: Bayesian geostatistical analysis in an endemic area, Thailand

Apiporn T. Suwannatrai et al.

Summary: This study found that factors such as male sex, increased age, altitude, precipitation, and land surface temperature significantly affected the infection rate and geographical distribution of O. viverrini and S. stercoralis in Khon Kaen Province, Thailand. Males were more likely to have O. viverrini - S. stercoralis co-infection. Spatial patterns of mono-infections of the two parasites differed, while co-infection was predicted to occur in the center and southeast of the study area.

Soil-transmitted helminths, intestinal protozoa and Clonorchis sinensis infections in southeast China

Yan Feng et al.

Summary: This study explored the prevalence and infection patterns of major intestinal parasites in Zhejiang province from 2014 to 2015. The overall prevalence of intestinal helminth infections was 1.80%, with hookworm being the most prevalent. While prevalence of STH and protozoa infections declined considerably, C. sinensis infections remained few. Health education on fertilization and farming habits is necessary in rural areas, and awareness concerning hookworm infection should be reinforced.

Prevalence of soil-transmitted helminth infections, schistosomiasis, and lymphatic filariasis before and after preventive chemotherapy initiation in the Philippines: A systematic review and meta-analysis

John Paul Caesar Robles delos Trinos et al.

Summary: The study found that preventive chemotherapy in the Philippines significantly reduced the burden of soil-transmitted helminth infections and schistosomiasis in children. The prevalence of lymphatic filariasis has also decreased, with most provinces achieving the elimination of lymphatic filariasis as a public health problem.

Edaphic and climatic factors influence on the distribution of soil transmitted helminths in Kogi East, Nigeria

Clement Ameh Yaro et al.

Summary: This study focused on determining the impact of environmental risk factors on the geospatial distribution of soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) in Kogi East, North Central Nigeria. It identified temperature, precipitation, and soil clay content as the key factors influencing the distribution of STHs in the region. Public health control programs targeting high-risk areas were recommended to include mass drug administration, health education, and improvement of water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities.

High burden of soil-transmitted helminth infections, schistosomiasis, undernutrition, and poor sanitation in two Typhoon Haiyan-stricken provinces in Eastern Philippines

Vicente Belizario et al.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the prevalence and intensity of soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) and schistosomiasis, as well as the nutritional status in preschool-age children (PSAC) and school-age children (SAC) in two Haiyan-stricken provinces. The study also investigated the association between STH, Schistosoma japonicum exposure, nutritional status, and sanitation. The findings suggest a persisting high burden of STH in PSAC and SAC, with significant associations between stunting, anemia, and STH in non-ZOD barangays. Strengthening local health systems and promoting intersectoral collaboration are needed for a coordinated response to address STH, undernutrition, and WASH in disaster-stricken areas.

The control of soil-transmitted helminthiases in the Philippines: the story continues

Mary Lorraine S. Mationg et al.

Summary: Despite major efforts to control soil-transmitted helminth infections in the Philippines for nearly two decades, high prevalence rates persist due to suboptimal mass drug administration coverage, limited water, sanitation, and hygiene programs, and inadequate health education. Sustainable delivery of integrated control approaches is crucial for reducing the burden of soil-transmitted helminth infections in the Philippines.
