Novel mode III DCB test setups and related evaluation methods to investigate the fracture behaviour of adhesive joints

Peer Schrader et al.

Summary: Two test setups are proposed for determining the critical mode III energy release rate (ERR) of adhesive joints. Nonlinear elastic fracture mechanics (J-integral) and linear elastic fracture mechanics (Irwin-Kies equation) are used for data evaluation. Crack length and process zone length are measured using backface strain measurements. The results show that the J-integral evaluation method is the most reliable for determining the mode III fracture energy.

Experimental determination of coupled cohesive laws with an unsymmetrical stiffness matrix for structural adhesive joints loaded in mixed-mode I plus III

Stephan Marzi

Summary: This manuscript presents a novel strategy to identify cohesive laws in mixed-mode I+III directly from experimental data. However, due to the physical behavior of adhesives, certain requirements for obtaining a constitutive law in mixed-mode cannot be fulfilled, which can be viewed as a disadvantage of the proposed method.

Adaptation and validation of FFT methods for homogenization of lattice based materials

S. Lucarini et al.

Summary: An FFT framework suitable for lattice based materials is proposed and evaluated for its performance compared to FEM solutions. The adapted Galerkin approach combined with Voigt surface smoothening was found to be the best FFT framework in terms of accuracy, numerical efficiency, and h-convergence. FFT becomes competitive with FEM in terms of numerical efficiency for cells with relative densities above approximately 7%.

A computationally efficient approach for generating RVEs of various inclusion/fibre shapes

Rajesh Nakka et al.

Summary: A computationally efficient method for generating virtual periodic representative volume element (RVE) is developed, capable of handling arbitrary inclusion shapes. A universal collision/overlap detection and repair method is proposed to remove inclusion overlaps. The generated RVEs are evaluated using statistical metrics, confirming the random distribution of inclusions. Effective properties of RVEs are determined using homogenization with various fibre cross-section shapes.

Voxel-based finite elements with hourglass control in fast Fourier transform-based computational homogenization

Matti Schneider

Summary: The power of fast Fourier transform (FFT)-based methods in computational micromechanics depends on the seamless integration of discretization scheme and solution method. Different discretization schemes have their advantages and disadvantages, and the rotated staggered grid discretization is widely used but has its own downsides. This article introduces FFT-based solution techniques for underintegrated trilinear finite elements with hourglass control, which stabilizes the convergence behavior, removes checkerboards, and allows for a softer material response compared to fully integrated elements.

Integral nonlocal approach to model interface decohesion in FFT solvers

L. Sharma et al.

Summary: The work extends the capability of Fast Fourier transform (FFT) solvers to interface damage modelling, incorporating the cohesive fracture concept using continuum damage mechanics and approximating sharp interfaces as interphases. Anisotropic kinematics are used to model interface crack opening and sliding, with discussions on decohesion model and nonlocal regularization within the interphases. Integral nonlocal approach is utilized to achieve delocalized deformation and scaling of cohesive parameters, with one-dimensional study on overall response and insensitivity of dissipation to interphase thickness, as well as crack propagation modelling in two-dimensional polycrystals.

An FFT framework for simulating non-local ductile failure in heterogeneous materials

M. Magri et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new algorithm for simulating gradient ductile damage, which effectively addresses issues in the spatial discretization of continuum ductile damage models. By iteratively solving the mechanical problem and the Helmhotz-type equation separately, the algorithm successfully simulates the failure process of complex 3D particle reinforced composites.

Summary: The J-integral and CTOD quantify the loading at the crack tip, with their equivalence depending on the constitutive law of the cohesive zone. A J-integral vector for mixed-mode loaded cracks is derived based on the cohesive zone approach in this paper.
