Mesenchymal Stem Cells Attenuate Sepsis-associated Acute Kidney Injury by Changing the Balance of Th17 cells/Tregs via Gal-9/Tim-3

Congjuan Luo et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the protective effect of MSCs on CLP-induced SA-AKI and determine the mechanisms. The results showed that MSCs relieved SA-AKI by inducing Tregs and inhibiting Th17 cells via the Gal-9/Tim-3 pathway.

Therapeutic potential of mesenchymal stromal/stem cells in critical-care patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome

Gerardo-Javier Marti-Chillon et al.

Summary: Despite advancements in ICU patient care, the management of those with SIRS is still a medical challenge. The hyperinflammatory state caused by initial injury and uncontrolled response leads to systemic hypotension and organ failure. MSCs, with their immunomodulatory and regenerative properties, are being explored as a potential therapy for SIRS.

Activated Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Therapy for Treatment of Multi-Drug Resistant Bacterial Infections in Dogs

Valerie Johnson et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that activated canine MSC produce and secrete antimicrobial peptides which synergize with common antibiotics for rapid bactericidal activity. Activated canine MSC also showed enhanced migration to inflammatory stimuli and secretion of factors related to wound healing, fibroblast proliferation, and recruitment of activated neutrophils. Clinical studies in dogs with chronic multidrug-resistant infections treated by activated MSC showed significant clinical benefit in terms of infection clearance and tissue healing.

Sepsis causes neutrophil infiltration in muscle leading to muscle atrophy and weakness in mice

Nobuto Nakanishi et al.

Summary: Sepsis-induced muscle atrophy leads to long-term physical dysfunction, with muscle-localized neutrophils playing a critical role in this process. Depletion of neutrophils in muscle can reverse sepsis-induced muscle atrophy and weakness, suggesting a potential therapeutic target for sepsis-related muscle complications.

Enforced mesenchymal stem cell tissue colonization counteracts immunopathology

David Garcia-Bernal et al.

Summary: Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) have immunoregulatory properties and can be used for the treatment of inflammatory conditions and immune diseases. Through a mouse model, it was found that adipose tissue-derived MSCs (HCELL+ MSCs) can effectively recruit to the affected tissue and exert protective effects on immunopathology, reducing leukocyte infiltration and inflammatory cytokine levels, and improving survival.

Evaluating IL-6 and IL-10 as rapid diagnostic tools for Gram-negative bacteria and as disease severity predictors in pediatric sepsis patients in the intensive care unit

Yunyu Zhang et al.

Summary: The study aimed to explore the diagnostic performance of IL-6 and IL-10 in distinguishing Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria types and predicting disease severity in ICU hospitalized pediatric sepsis patients. The results showed that IL-6 and IL-10 levels were significantly elevated in Gram-negative sepsis and their combination indicators were effective in identifying Gram-negative sepsis. However, the differences in IL-6 and IL-10 levels between Gram-positive and Gram-negative sepsis were less significant in patients with progressively deteriorating organ function. IL-6 and IL-10 had a certain diagnostic efficacy in predicting Gram-negative sepsis and NPMODS.

Mechanism and Potential of Extracellular Vesicles Derived From Mesenchymal Stem Cells for the Treatment of Infectious Diseases

Jingyi You et al.

Summary: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are nano-sized membrane vesicles secreted by cells, serving as a mediator for cell-to-cell communication. Mesenchymal stem cells-derived EVs (MSC-EVs) have shown therapeutic value in treating infectious diseases by eliminating pathogens, regulating immunity, and repairing tissue damage.
