Summary: This study is the first to show evidence of a negative association between LTPA and loneliness among people with SCI/D, and it establishes a conceptual model for understanding the potential mediating role of loneliness in the relationship between LTPA and life satisfaction among people with SCI/D.

Cost-Effectiveness of a Group vs Individually Delivered Exercise Program in Community-Dwelling Persons Aged ≥70 Years

Sophie Gottschalk et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the cost-effectiveness of a group-delivered version of the Lifestyle-integrated Functional Exercise Program compared with an individually delivered program version. The results showed that the group program was cost-effective for increasing physical activity but its effectiveness in terms of quality-adjusted life years and fall prevention was uncertain.

Staying active after rehab: Physical activity perspectives with a spinal cord injury beyond functional gains

Laura A. Baehr et al.

Summary: This study conducted small group interviews with individuals living with SCI to understand the factors leading to a lack of physical activity participation. The findings revealed challenges such as gaps in physical activity education, isolation during psychological adjustment, and knowledge limitations in community exercise settings. The COVID-19 pandemic also posed additional environmental constraints. Personal motivators for physical activity included secondary condition prevention, while social and emotional barriers hindered regular adherence.

Effectiveness and feasibility of the workout on wheels internet intervention (WOWii) for individuals with spinal cord injury: a randomized controlled trial

Katherine Froehlich-Grobe et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effectiveness and feasibility of a virtually-delivered exercise intervention for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). The results showed that the program significantly increased participants' physical activity levels and improved their self-efficacy for exercise, while also reducing exercise barriers. The findings suggest that virtual exercise interventions can be a promising approach for promoting exercise among individuals with SCI.

Summary: This study tracked and evaluated changes in the number and types of physical activity barriers experienced by adults with spinal cord injury (SCI) in response to a physical activity counselling intervention. The results showed a significant decrease in the number of reported barriers across different levels of influence, with intrapersonal barriers showing the greatest reduction over time.

A tele-health intervention to increase physical fitness in people with spinal cord injury and cardiometabolic disease or risk factors: a pilot randomized controlled trial

Charles H. Bombardier et al.

Summary: This clinical trial aimed to test the feasibility and efficacy of a telehealth-based physical activity counseling intervention for individuals with spinal cord injury in increasing physical fitness. The study found that the effects of treatment on fitness and most cardiometabolic risk factors did not meet expectations, but the effects on self-reported physical activity, depression, and pain did meet expectations.

Matthijs F. Wouda et al.

Summary: This study conducted secondary analysis on a clinical trial involving 30 ambulatory individuals with incomplete SCI during the first year after discharge from inpatient rehabilitation. The results indicated that despite minimal increases in activity levels, individuals with SCI were able to improve their cardiorespiratory fitness levels during this time period.

Summary: The study found that leisure time physical activity interventions have positive effects on chronic pain and subjective well-being among adults with spinal cord injury. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms by which LTPA affects pain and SWB in order to develop more effective interventions.
