Characterization of the explosiveness of wood dust

Alba Santamaria-Herrera et al.

Summary: The explosiveness of wood dust is influenced by factors such as particle size distribution, moisture content, and microscopic structure. The flammability of sawdust has been tested, and the minimum explosive concentration and ignition temperature of dust clouds and layers have been measured. Dust granulometry and moisture are crucial parameters in determining the potential for explosion. Smaller particles with lower moisture content pose a higher ignition and/or explosion risk. Samples collected from cutting processes and ventilation ducts or facilities have been classified, with the latter group being the most dangerous. In some cases, dust samples with up to 35% moisture or particle sizes exceeding 500 μm at maximum dryness can cause an explosion.

Effect of Low-Thermal Treatment on the Particle Size Distribution in Wood Dust after Milling

Martin Juda et al.

Summary: The thermal treatment of wood improves the appearance, stability, and resistance of the wood product. However, it also changes the properties of the wood, making it a new engineering material. This study investigates the effect of low-temperature thermal treatment on the creation of fine dust particles during woodworking.

Quantifying the Finest Particles in Dust Fractions Created During the Sanding of Untreated and Thermally Modified Beech Wood

Jerzy Majka et al.

Summary: This article examines the fractionation of wood dust after sanding, comparing untreated wood dust to thermally modified wood dust. The results show that both types of wood dust have similar particle size distributions and that all fractions contain the finest particles that are suspendable in the air.

Effect of Grit Size on Airborne Particle Concentration and Size Distribution during Oak Wood Sanding

Miroslav Dado et al.

Summary: This study found that different grit sizes of sandpaper used in oak wood sanding have an impact on particle concentration, whereas particle size distribution is not affected by grit size.

Influence of drying mode and feed per tooth rate on the fine dust creation in pine and beech sawing on a mini sash gang saw

Tomasz Rogozinski et al.

Summary: The experimental results showed that while the drying process did not affect the general particle size distribution of the sawdust, it did increase the content of very fine dust particles in beech wood sawdust under specific conditions.

Granulometric Characterization of Wood Dust Emission from CNC Machining of Natural Wood and Medium Density Fiberboard

Richard Kminiak et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the particle size composition of wood dust emission from CNC milling of natural wood and MDF, and evaluate the associated occupational exposure risks. Results showed that machining natural wood and MDF resulted in different dust particle size distributions, which can be used to optimize the technological programs of CNC milling machines to reduce occupational exposure in the wood-processing industry.
