International Status Concerns and Domestic Support for Political Leaders

Summary: This study examines the impact of the public's international status concerns on support for political leaders. The results show that adverse outcomes in world affairs increase expectations of international status loss and decrease presidential approval. The analysis of survey responses reveals that the public views international status in a similar way to international relations scholars, highlighting the importance of public's concerns for leaders and providing new insights into how the public interprets events abroad.

Material military power: A country-year measure of military power, 1865-2019

Summary: Military power is crucial in diplomacy and international relations, but traditional measures have limitations in capturing the full extent of a country's power. This article proposes a new measure of military power that focuses on armaments, including naval, air, and land weapons, nuclear weapons, and ballistic missile capability. The author examines the validity of this measure and compares it with existing measures, finding that it better predicts war outcomes, accounts for militarized threats, and serves as an effective control variable for evaluating a country's power.

No Fair! Distinguishing Between the Pursuit of Status and Equity in International Relations

Summary: Status-seeking and fairness-seeking behaviors are difficult to distinguish, but can be differentiated by the degree of demand for exclusive rights and privileges. Survey experiments and case studies provide strong support for the argument that fairness concerns drive much of what is attributed to status-seeking. This research suggests that leaders demand entitlements that match their status, but do not demonstrate a tendency to exclude others once assured of their deserved treatment.

Role status and status-saving behaviour in world politics: the ASEAN case

Summary: This article examines the importance of 'role status' in the international political system and explores how the potential loss of role status can lead to policy change. Using the case of ASEAN, the article demonstrates how states can adopt risk-acceptant strategies to salvage their declining role status in world politics. The study suggests that pursuing role status is another way for states, especially rising powers, to seek status in the international hierarchy, and dominant powers should accommodate and encourage such pursuit.
