Retrospective cohort study on treatment modalities and survival time after oesophageal fistula in patients with oesophageal cancer in a regional cancer care centre in China

Wencai Xu et al.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study analyzed data from 352 patients with oesophageal cancer in Zhengzhou, China. The findings suggest that stent grafting or gastrostomy may be preferable to nasogastric tube in survival prognosis for patients with oesophagotracheal fistulae. However, stent grafting may not be as favorable as nasogastric tube or gastrostomy in survival prognosis for patients with oesophageal-mediastinal fistulae.

The clinical characteristics, treatments and prognosis of post-esophagectomy airway fistula: a multicenter cohort study

Bin Zheng et al.

Summary: PEAF is a rare but life-threatening complication after esophagectomy, with different types of patients possibly having different inducements. The healing rates of surgical and conservative treatments are similar, with stent implantation showing potential to improve efficacy. Type II L2 patients are the most difficult to cure.

Management of Cervical Tracheo-Esophageal Fistula by Lateral Cervical Approach: Our Experience'

T. Satish Chandra et al.

Summary: Acquired tracheo-esophageal fistula (TEF) is a challenging condition characterized by loss of laryngeal protection and potential respiratory complications. While malignancy is the leading cause of TEF, nonmalignant causes such as prolonged ventilation, trauma, and foreign bodies also contribute to its development. Techniques like lateral cervical approach have been successful in managing TEF cases, even in patients with additional airway complications.
