Guidelines for breast cancer management in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Lejla Hadzikadic-Gusic et al.

Summary: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, but accurate data on its status are lacking in Bosnia and Herzegovina due to the absence of a central registry. Multiple international guidelines and consensus have emphasized the need for optimal treatment options and specialty breast centers. To address this issue, a round table of multidisciplinary specialists was held to develop the first multidisciplinary guidelines for breast cancer management in BiH, which will serve as a valuable resource for practitioners and potential investors in this region.

Cell-Free Fetal DNA and Non-Invasive Prenatal Diagnosis of Chromosomopathies and Pediatric Monogenic Diseases: A Critical Appraisal and Medicolegal Remarks

Giuseppe Gullo et al.

Summary: Cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA) analysis is a non-invasive prenatal diagnostic test used to screen for chromosomal or monogenic pathologies of the fetus. A narrative review of 45 studies was conducted to critically assess its diagnostic value, and it was found to be well-established for screening purposes. The review also highlighted the need for validation studies and discussions involving all stakeholders to address the legal and ethical complexities associated with these techniques.

Breast cancer during pregnancy: epidemiology, phenotypes, presentation during pregnancy and therapeutic modalities

Ingrid Boere et al.

Summary: Breast cancer during pregnancy requires special considerations in diagnosis, staging, and treatment due to the impact on the fetus. Breast ultrasound and mammography are preferred for imaging and staging. The treatment strategy should prioritize state-of-the-art oncological treatment and prolonging the pregnancy if possible. Surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy can be performed at certain stages, while endocrine therapy and HER2 targeted therapy are contraindicated throughout the entire pregnancy.

Fertility preservation in female cancer sufferers: (only) a moral obligation?

Simona Zaami et al.

Summary: This article explores the provision of evidence-based oncofertility counseling for female cancer patients. The study found that counseling should comply with international guidelines, but there are lingering difficulties in healthcare facilities. Oncofertility counseling should facilitate patients' access to fertility preservation procedures and enable informed decision-making based on ethical and legal standards. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation and individual autonomy in oncofertility counseling.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the activity of the Breast Unit of the Policlinico Umberto I Hospital in Rome, Italy, and its compliance with guidelines. The results showed growing interest in oncofertility, but the demand for fertility preservation practices did not increase proportionally. This highlights the need for standardized counseling and a multidisciplinary medical team to support patients in decision-making.
