A synthesis and appraisal of clinical practice guidelines, consensus statements and Cochrane systematic reviews for the management of focal spasticity in adults and children

Gavin Williams et al.

Summary: This study aimed to generate a synthesized guideline for the management of adult and paediatric focal spasticity by identifying and appraising existing clinical practice guidelines, consensus statements, and Cochrane systematic reviews. The review included 25 papers, consisting of clinical practice guidelines, consensus statements, and Cochrane systematic reviews. The findings highlighted the importance of a multidisciplinary team, goal-directed therapy, involvement of patients and families in goal development, and the need for follow-up evaluations. The quality of the guidelines varied, but several strong themes emerged.

Association of Lower Limb Focal Spasticity With Kinematic Variables During Walking in Traumatic Brain Injury

Gavin Williams et al.

Summary: The relationship between focal muscle spasticity and kinematics of walking in traumatic brain injury patients was examined. It was found that focal muscle spasticity had little relationship with kinematic variables and walking speed in this cohort of people with TBI who could walk without assistance.

CLINICAL SPASTICITY ASSESSMENT USING THE MODIFIED TARDIEU SCALE DOES NOT REFLECT JOINT ANGULAR VELOCITY OR RANGE OF MOTION DURING WALKING: ASSESSMENT TOOL IMPLICATIONS

Summary: This study found that clinicians often completed the Modified Tardieu Scale too quickly, leading to mismatches with joint angles and angular velocities during walking.
