Geographies of gender and sexuality I: Engaging the shift towards Southern urbanism

Andrew Tucker

Summary: Geographers and scholars working on non-heteronormative sexualities have recognized the importance of engaging with the urban South, particularly in relation to the literature on Southern urbanism. Recent scholarship on sexualities is showing direct connections with the broader interests of Southern urbanism, and it has more in common with the empirical and theoretical interests of Southern urbanism compared to existing geographies of sexualities literature. This emergent scholarship has the potential to enrich geographies of sexualities literature in new and exciting ways.

Nairobi Queer Visibilities/Invisibilities and Forms of Queer Ambivalence

Summary: Despite legal protection absence, severe social discrimination, and transient safety, Nairobi has become a livable place for queer communities due to their diverse lived experiences and inventive uses of urban space. This paper speculates how queer residents enable an animation of spaces that perpetuate forms of ambivalence and offer alternative readings of queer visibilities.

Women who prefer lesbian to queer: generational continuity and discontinuity

Survey data show that some women choose to retain the identity lesbian due to reasons such as historical connection, political orientation, and identification with the lesbian community. Despite debates about its relevance, individuals still find utility and meaning in the term, challenging discussions about a generational divide.

There's No Such Thing as a Gay Bar: Co-Sexuality and the Neoliberal Branding of Queer Spaces

Summary: Through studying two gay bars, it is revealed that the meaning and branding of gay bars have been repositioned to be inclusive of all sexualities due to neoliberalism. The study shows that there are three tensions present in gay bars, including the target audience, sexual autonomy, and the conflict between community and commodification in marketing.
