Patients' experiences of flexor tendon rehabilitation in relation to adherence: a qualitative study

Jonas Svingen et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to explore patients' experiences of early active motion flexor tendon rehabilitation in relation to adherence to restrictions and outcome of rehabilitation. The results showed that patients' perception of the severity of hand function and susceptibility to loss of hand function affected their behavior. The perceived benefits or efficacy of exercise and following restrictions were compared to the cost of doing so, leading to adherence or non-adherence behavior. Perceived self-efficacy was influenced by previous knowledge and varied during the rehabilitation period. External factors and interaction with therapists influenced the perception of the severity of the injury and the cost and benefits of adhering to rehabilitation.

Pre-existing Mental Health Diagnoses Are Associated With Higher Rates of Postoperative Complications, Readmissions, and Reoperations Following Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair

Ryan D. Freshman et al.

Summary: The study investigates the association between preoperative mental health disorders and postoperative complications, readmissions, and revision procedures among patients undergoing arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. The findings suggest that patients with pre-existing mental health diagnoses have higher rates of postoperative complications, readmissions, and revision surgeries. Therefore, preoperative mental health status is an important factor in arthroscopic rotator cuff repair surgery.

Factors affecting orthosis adherence after acute traumatic hand tendon repairs: A prospective cohort study

Serpil Savas et al.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the factors affecting the orthosis adherence in patients with acute traumatic tendon repairs. The study found that only one-third of the patients were fully adherent with the orthosis wear program, and depression in the very acute period of injury impaired orthosis adherence.

General Anxiety Is Associated with Problematic Initial Recovery After Carpal Tunnel Release

Claire Ryan et al.

Summary: Problematic initial recovery after carpal tunnel release is associated with symptoms of anxiety rather than the severity of median neuropathy. This emphasizes the need to study the ability to alleviate anxiety symptoms before carpal tunnel release as an effective intervention.

Patient outcomes and costs after isolated flexor tendon repairs of the hand

Gopal. R. Lalchandani et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between hand therapy utilization and reoperation rates after flexor tendon repair and quantified the reoperation rates and costs associated with flexor tendon repair. The findings revealed that continued therapy utilization after primary flexor tendon repair is an independent predictor of reoperation need. These results can assist surgeons in counseling patients who require a large number of visits after flexor tendon repair on when to revisit surgical options.

Risk factors for reoperation after flexor tendon repair: a registry study

Jonas Svingen et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to identify risk factors for reoperations after Zones 1 and 2 flexor tendon repairs. A multiple logistic regression model was used to identify these risk factors, which included age, gender, socio-economics, and surgical techniques. Understanding these risk factors can provide important guidance for surgeons and therapists in treating patients with flexor tendon injuries.

Surgical outcomes for people with serious mental illness are poorer than for other patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Kate E. McBride et al.

Summary: The study found that adults with serious mental illness undergoing surgery were more likely to experience post-operative complications and longer hospital stays, but not significantly higher in-hospital or 30-day mortality rates. Targeted pre-operative interventions may help improve surgical outcomes for these vulnerable patients.
