Small babies, big risks: global estimates of prevalence and mortality for vulnerable newborns to accelerate change and

Joy E. Lawn et al.

Summary: Small newborns are at risk of mortality and loss of human capital. Reduction targets for low-birthweight babies are not being met. Preterm birth and fetal growth restriction are the two pathways to low-birthweight, with the latter resulting in small for gestational age babies. Data on these babies are insufficient globally, and classification based on vulnerability types can improve prevention and care for the most vulnerable infants.

Factors Associated with Occurrence of Stillbirth before 32 Weeks of Gestation in a Contemporary Cohort

Elizabeth E. Brackett et al.

Summary: This study quantified the distribution of stillbirths by gestational age and identified identifiable risk factors for stillbirth prior to 32 weeks of gestation. The results showed that more than 6 out of 10 stillbirths occurred before 32 weeks of gestation, and chronic hypertension, Black race, and fetal growth restriction were associated with higher risk of stillbirth before 32 weeks.

Antenatal Doppler screening for fetuses at risk of adverse outcomes: a multicountry cohort study of the prevalence of abnormal resistance index in low-risk pregnant women

Valerie Vannevel et al.

Summary: This study conducted a multicentre, prospective cohort study in five LMICs to determine the prevalence of abnormal fetal umbilical artery resistance indices among low-risk pregnant women using a low-cost Doppler device. The results showed that a single Doppler screening using the Umbiflow device could detect a large number of fetuses at risk of growth restriction and reduce adverse perinatal outcomes.

Detection of growth-restricted fetuses during pregnancy is associated with fewer intrauterine deaths but increased adverse childhood outcomes: an observational study

L. A. Andreasen et al.

Summary: This retrospective study explored the associations between antenatal detection of fetal growth restriction (FGR) and adverse childhood outcomes. The results showed that detected infants had higher risks of gastrointestinal/urogenital disorders and respiratory disorders, with a slight increase in adverse neuropsychiatric outcomes. However, there was no clear association between detection and adverse neonatal outcomes or endocrine disorders.

Preventable stillbirths in India and Pakistan: a prospective, observational study

R. L. Goldenberg et al.

Summary: By defining and analyzing preventable stillbirths in low-income settings in India and Pakistan, this study found that majority of stillbirths were preventable and commonly associated with maternal hypertension, antepartum hemorrhage, small for gestational age (SGA), and intrapartum demise. Improved care for women with hypertension, growth restriction, and antepartum hemorrhage could prevent most stillbirths.
