Comparison of functions of pheromone receptor repertoires in Helicoverpa armigera and Helicoverpa assulta using a Drosophila expression system

Hao Guo et al.

Summary: Researchers compared the function of pheromone receptors (PRs) in Helicoverpa armigera and H. assulta by expressing their PR repertoires in Drosophila T1 neurons. All PRs of the two species, except for OR11, have been deorphanized using a Drosophila expression system and a large panel of pheromone compounds. This study provides a valuable reference for understanding the peripheral coding of pheromones.

An Odorant Receptor from the Proboscis of the Cotton Bollworm Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Narrowly Tuned to Indole

Mengbo Guo et al.

Summary: This study provides insights into the olfactory perception of Helicoverpa armigera, identifying the role of HarmOR30 in tuning to indole, a key nitrogen-containing compound mediating tritrophic interactions. The findings suggest a potential function for HarmOR30 in foraging and mediating interactions with the environment.

Sex pheromone communication in an insect parasitoid, Campoletis chlorideae Uchida

Hao Guo et al.

Summary: This study identifies the sex pheromone and elucidates the olfactory basis of sex pheromone communication in Campoletis chlorideae, a parasitoid wasp. It demonstrates the importance of specific receptors in male attraction and mating behavior, and also shows the synergistic effects of the sex pheromone and a female attractant in increasing the parasitic efficiency of the wasp.

Summary: Closely related species Helicoverpa armigera and Helicoverpa assulta have differences in host plant ranges and sex pheromones. The study investigates the genetic basis for gene expression divergence in the antennae of the two species, and explores the connection between gene expression and phenotypic differences. The research findings provide insights into the rapid evolutionary changes in important olfactory traits in moths.

Odorant Receptors for Detecting Flowering Plant Cues Are Functionally Conserved across Moths and Butterflies

Mengbo Guo et al.

Summary: This study characterized the role of the moth Helicoverpa armigera OR42 and its orthologs in plant-volatile detection, revealing strong specificity to a common floral scent component across Glossata species. The research also demonstrated the coevolution of these ORs with the tube-like proboscis in moths and their essential role in host-detection. These findings provide insights into the intimate adaptations and ecological interactions between nectar feeding insects and flowering plants.

Screening for effective odors through which Conopomorpha sinensis Bradley (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) locates its host

Xiang Meng et al.

Summary: In this study, the olfactory responses of Conopomorpha sinensis to host volatile compounds were analyzed, revealing that certain components were more stimulatory to female antennae, while mixtures could significantly alter female antennae responses. The findings were further confirmed through behavioral assays, indicating that specific compounds or their combinations can affect the behavior of insects. Additionally, real-time PCR results suggested that specific compound combinations could alter the expression of olfactory genes, providing a basis for exploring host recognition and utilizing olfactory networks for biocontrol at a molecular level.

Contribution of odorant binding proteins to olfactory detection of (Z)-11-hexadecenal in Helicoverpa armigera

Hao Guo et al.

Summary: The study shows that both HarmPBP1 and HarmPBP2 are involved in the detection of Z11-16:Ald in the male antennae of Helicoverpa armigera. HarmPBP1 and HarmPBP2 were found to be localized in cells surrounding the olfactory receptor neurons expressing HarmOR13. However, they have little effect on the selectivity and response kinetics of HarmOR13.

The structural basis of odorant recognition in insect olfactory receptors

Josefina del Marmol et al.

Summary: Olfactory systems use a common strategy of combinatorial activation of olfactory receptors to detect a vast chemical world. The olfactory receptor MhOR5 from the jumping bristletail is a homotetrameric odorant-gated ion channel with broad chemical tuning, recognizing odorants through distributed hydrophobic interactions in a simple binding pocket. The receptor's sensitivity to odorants can be predictably altered by mutating individual residues in the binding pocket, shedding light on the molecular recognition mechanisms of the olfactory system.
