Tactile discrimination of real and simulated isotropic textures by Friction-Induced Vibrations

Livia Felicetti et al.

Summary: Friction-induced vibrations are important mechanical signals that mediate the perception of fine surface texture by stimulating mechanoreceptors. In this work, isotropic textures were simulated using a tactile device that reproduces the friction-induced vibrations of real textures. Discrimination experiments showed excellent results in distinguishing both real and simulated textures. The discrimination errors and correct associations were explained by analyzing the spectra of the friction-induced vibrations, highlighting the importance of overall amplitude and spectra in the discrimination of isotropic textures.

GAN-based image-to-friction generation for tactile simulation of fabric material

Shaoyu Cai et al.

Summary: This paper presents a deep-learning-based framework for generating frictional signals from textured images of fabric materials to simulate tactile feedback. The experimental results demonstrate that the generated frictional signals are visually and statistically close to the ground-truth signals, and users are unable to distinguish between them.
