Single-Stage Titanium Mesh Cranioplasty for the Treatment of Depressed Skull Fractures

Jonathan R. Garst et al.

Summary: The study reviewed 22 cases of single-stage titanium mesh cranioplasty for comminuted depressed skull fractures. The results showed that single-stage titanium mesh cranioplasty is a safe option, with no postoperative neurological complications or infections.

Depressed skull fracture compressing eloquent cortex causing focal neurologic deficits

Alexander In et al.

Summary: This case report describes a rare indication for emergent cranioplasty in a 40-year-old male patient who presented with multiple neurologic deficits and a depressed skull fracture. Immediate fracture elevation and decompression of the eloquent cortex resulted in a full recovery without any residual deficits.

Can we do better at measuring patient-reported outcomes after cranioplasty? A systematic review

Taborah Z. Zaramo et al.

Summary: Measuring quality of life (QOL) after cranioplasty is essential but lacking in specific patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) for adults. This systematic review identified 17 articles with eight QOL PROMs, none being validated or developed for cranioplasty patients. The four domains of QOL assessed were physical health, psychological health, social health, and general QOL, but the assessment of appearance was limited. There is an urgent need to develop comprehensive PROMs for cranioplasty patients.

Cranioplasty for Skull Defects With Polypropylene Abdominal Wall Mesh

Bashar Abuzayed et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates successful treatment outcomes using polypropylene mesh for cranioplasty, showing that it is a cheap and effective alternative for reconstructing small to medium-sized skull defects. It can be especially useful in rural or low economic communities where other materials may not be readily available.

Outcome and risk factors of complications after cranioplasty with polyetheretherketone and titanium mesh: A single-center retrospective study

Shun Yao et al.

Summary: This study compared the incidence of complications and constructive effects of cranioplasty with PEEK and titanium mesh, and explored potential risk factors of postoperative and post-discharge complications. The results showed no differences in overall complication rates between the two materials, but a history of ventriculoperitoneal shunt before cranioplasty was an independent risk factor for postoperative complications, and infection was a risk factor for implant failure.

Ultra-Early Cranioplasty versus Conventional Cranioplasty: A Retrospective Cohort Study at an Academic Level 1 Trauma Center

Akal Sethi et al.

Summary: The study aimed to compare the efficacy, safety, and comparability of ultra-early cranioplasty (<30 days from craniectomy) with conventional cranioplasty (>30 days from craniectomy). The results showed that ultra-early cranioplasty significantly reduces the incidence of post-CP hydrocephalus and operative time compared to conventional cranioplasty. However, the timing of cranioplasty should be considered on a patient-centered basis.

Complications of cranioplasty in relationship to traumatic brain injury: a systematic review and meta-analysis

David Shepetovsky et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between complications after cranioplasty (CP) and the initial injury, showing that TBI patients have increased odds of bone flap resorption (BFR) and infection after CP. This highlights the importance of implementing new strategies to prevent these complications in TBI patients.
