Deciphering the Relationship Between Free and Vesicular Hemoglobin in Stored Red Blood Cell Units

Vassilis L. Tzounakas et al.

Summary: Red blood cells lose hemoglobin during storage and release extracellular vesicles. The study found a negative correlation between storage hemolysis and extracellular vesicle-enclosed hemoglobin levels. Additionally, a threshold of 0.17% storage hemolysis was identified, above which a different distribution of vesicle sizes was observed.

Interspecies Diversity of Osmotic Gradient Deformability of Red Blood Cells in Human and Seven Vertebrate Animal Species

Adam Varga et al.

Summary: Plasma and blood osmolality values vary among different species and are closely regulated. These factors also affect microrheological parameters, such as RBC deformability and aggregation. This study explored the interspecies differences in RBC deformability at various blood osmolality levels and found significant variation among species. The findings highlight the importance of osmotic gradient deformability in understanding microrheological diversity and alterations caused by osmolality changes.

Supplemental findings of the 2019 National Blood Collection and Utilization Survey

Sanjida J. Mowla et al.

Summary: Blood donations decreased slightly between 2017 and 2019. Contributions from younger donors decreased while those from older donors increased. Hospitals paid lower prices for blood products, and implementation of blood safety measures, including pathogen reduction technology, continued to expand slowly.
