Co-pyrolysis of cellulose with urea and chitosan to produce nitrogen-containing compounds and nitrogen-doped biochar: Product distribution characteristics and reaction path analysis

Wenjing Zhao et al.

Summary: The use of lignocellulose and nitrogen carriers to produce nitrogen-rich bio-oil and biochar has gained attention for its high-value conversion and utilization of biomass. This study focused on the co-pyrolysis of cellulose with urea and chitosan to produce nitrogen-containing chemicals. The optimal conditions for nitrogen-rich cellulose pyrolysis were analyzed and summarized, revealing the different nitrogen compounds formed with urea and chitosan. The addition of chitosan promoted biochar yield, while the nitrogen content varied with temperature due to the presence of amino groups.

Evaluation of fuel properties and combustion behaviour of hydrochar derived from hydrothermal carbonisation of agricultural wastes

Shuang Wu et al.

Summary: Biomass energy can effectively replace traditional fossil fuels. This study investigated the physicochemical properties, combustion characteristics, kinetic analysis, and slagging and fouling tendencies of hydrochar fuels prepared from agricultural wastes at different hydrothermal carbonisation temperatures. The highest energy yield of 68.54% was achieved at a hydrothermal carbonisation temperature of 220 degrees C. Higher temperatures promoted the formation of aromatic structures and hindered the formation of oxygen-containing functional groups. The hydrochar exhibited low slagging and fouling tendencies, improving heat transfer efficiency.

Research progress in the preparation of high-quality liquid fuels and chemicals by catalytic pyrolysis of biomass: A review

Bingbing Qiu et al.

Summary: Considering the pressures of energy and the environment, utilizing biomass as a renewable resource to obtain hydrocarbon fuels and high-value chemicals shows important application value and broad market prospects. However, improving the quality of bio-oil is crucial due to the challenges posed by the complex pyrolysis process of biomass, low calorific value, high oxygen content, and strong acidity.Various techniques such as direct catalytic pyrolysis, fast pyrolysis, and catalytic upgrading have been explored to prepare bio-oil and high value chemicals from biomass, each with its own achievements and challenges. Additionally, the catalytic characteristics of catalysts and their specific applications in catalytic pyrolysis, catalytic cracking, and catalytic hydrogenation are systematically summarized to provide new directions for lignocellulose biomass energy utilization research.

External fields enhanced glycerol pretreatment of forestry waste for producing value-added pyrolytic chemicals

Xingwei Yang et al.

Summary: Softwood forestry waste can be converted into value-added chemicals through fast pyrolysis, but its recalcitrant nature and the presence of alkaline metals pose challenges. Glycerol pretreatment separates the lignocellulosic structure into three fractions, and utilizing external fields like ultrasonic and microwave radiation can enhance the pretreatment effect. The combination of ultrasonic radiation and microwave heating showed the optimal pretreatment effect, deconstructing pine sawdust into valuable fractions while removing alkaline and alkaline earth metals, facilitating the production of desired pyrolytic chemicals.
