Novel lipid biomarkers and associated gene polymorphism in young ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction

Ghazi Muheeb et al.

Summary: The prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD) is increasing in younger individuals. Lipid biomarkers and their genetic polymorphisms play an important role in the development of CAD. This study explored the role of lipid biomarkers and genetic polymorphisms in young ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients. The results showed that lipid biomarkers (Apo A1, Apo B, PON1) and their genetic polymorphisms are associated with the susceptibility for STEMI in young individuals.

Biochemical Association of MTHFR C677T Polymorphism with Myocardial Infarction in the Presence of Diabetes Mellitus as a Risk Factor

Tauqeer Hussain Mallhi et al.

Summary: Myocardial infarction (MI) is a cardiovascular disease caused by coronary artery blockage, leading to cardiac muscle death. The etiology of MI involves environmental, occupational, and genetic factors. Previous studies have shown that different variants of the MTHFR gene are responsible for MI by impacting folate and homocysteine metabolism. This study focuses on investigating the genetic polymorphism of MTHFR C677T (rs1801133) and its association with MI in the presence of diabetes mellitus (DM) as a risk factor. The study found that the T/T homozygous genotype of MTHFR C677T (rs1801133) was significantly associated with MI in patients with DM as a risk factor.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between ACE I/D genotypes and the severity of coronary artery disease in patients with acute myocardial infarction. The study found that the DD genotype of the ACE I/D polymorphism was independently associated with a higher severity of coronary artery disease.

Association of integrin-beta 2 polymorphism and expression with the risk of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis in Egyptian patients

Aliaa M. Selim et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the association of ITGB2 rs2070946 single nucleotide polymorphism with the vulnerability to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA), as well as its influence on ITGB2 mRNA expression, and the potential of serum ITGB2 expression in the diagnosis of RA and OA. The results showed that serum ITGB2 mRNA expression was upregulated in RA and OA patients, and ITGB2 rs2070946 was associated with an increased risk of both diseases. Serum ITGB2 expression could be a valuable biomarker for the timely diagnosis of RA and OA.

Genetic Risk Factors Related to Coronary Artery Disease and Role of Transforming Growth Factor Beta 1 Polymorphisms

Damian Malinowski et al.

Summary: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a leading cause of mortality worldwide and has a heritable component. Recent research has made progress in uncovering the genetic factors involved, offering potential for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Numerous genes related to lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, endothelial and smooth muscle function, coagulation, and the immune system have been identified as playing a role in CAD. Inflammation, mediated in part by TGF beta 1, is important in the development of CAD.

The LDL-C/Apo B predicts coronary atherosclerotic heart disease in non-diabetic patients without high LDL-C

Hae Won Jung et al.

Summary: The association between Apo B, Apo B/A1 ratio, lipoprotein (a), and LDL-C/Apo B ratio with coronary artery disease (CAD) in non-diabetic patients without high LDL-C levels was unclear. A study was conducted on 487 non-diabetic patients with LDL-C < 130.0 mg/dL to evaluate the most strongly associated parameter with CAD. The LDL-C/Apo B ratio was found to be the most predictive parameter for coronary atherosclerosis in non-diabetic patients without high LDL-C levels.

Cis-epistasis at the LPA locus and risk of cardiovascular diseases

Lingyao Zeng et al.

Summary: This study attempts to identify non-additive genetic effects associated with CAD, specifically epistatic interactions. A SNP pair located in cis at the LPA locus was found to be jointly associated with risk for CAD, peripheral arterial disease, aortic stenosis, hepatic lipoprotein(a) levels, and Lp(a) serum levels, while individual SNPs displayed no association. Further exploration revealed a strong dependency on a rare variant influencing risk through additive genetic as well as epistatic effects.

Clinical utility of polygenic risk scores for coronary artery disease

Derek Klarin et al.

Summary: In recent years, significant progress has been made in the discovery of genes related to the risk of coronary artery disease, and polygenic risk scores are widely used for predicting disease occurrence and guiding clinical treatment. These scores are also used for screening high-risk patients, identifying treatment-beneficial populations, and designing effective clinical trial protocols.

Apolipoprotein B and Cardiovascular Disease: Biomarker and Potential Therapeutic Target

Jennifer Behbodikhah et al.

Summary: Apolipoprotein B plays a crucial role in atherogenic lipoproteins, with two major isoforms: apoB48 and apoB100. ApoB concentration serves as a direct measure of circulating atherogenic lipoproteins, independent of particle cholesterol content, making it a more accurate indicator of cardiovascular risk than total cholesterol or LDL cholesterol.
