Transesterification of Algae Oil and Little Amount of Waste Cooking Oil Blend at Low Temperature in the Presence of NaOH

Siddharth Jain et al.

Summary: The present study demonstrates a single-step transesterification method for producing biodiesel from high free fatty acid (FFA) waste cooking oil blended with algae oil using a homogeneous base catalyst. Optimization studies are conducted using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and the obtained results indicate that an effective biodiesel yield of 92% can be achieved at optimized conditions. This study provides a solution to the storage problem of high FFA oils from different feedstock and highlights the successful use of RSM for maximizing the biodiesel yield.

A critical review on the economic aspects and life cycle assessment of biodiesel production using heterogeneous nanocatalysts

Hossein Esmaeili

Summary: This review paper focuses on the economic aspects of biodiesel production using nanocatalysts from different oil sources. The findings reveal that the use of CaO and MgO nanocatalysts and their derivatives decreases the cost of biodiesel production due to their simple synthesis, low-cost, abundance in nature, and high catalytic ability. Moreover, labor costs and plant production capacity have a significant impact on the biodiesel price. Using low-cost and non-edible oils with high oil content, such as Schizochytrium sp. microalga and jojoba, can significantly reduce the cost of biodiesel production.

Supercritical CO2 extraction of lipids and astaxanthin from Atlantic shrimp by-products with static co-solvents: Process optimization and mathematical modeling studies

Sara Ahmadkelayeh et al.

Summary: Shrimp processing by-products contain valuable biomaterials/bioactive materials, such as lipids and astaxanthin, which can be extracted through supercritical extraction combined with co-solvents. The extraction conditions, including pressure, carbon dioxide flow, and temperature, affect the yields and compositions of lipids and astaxanthin. Polar organic co-solvents in co-solvent experiments show higher extraction yields and concentrations of phospholipids/saturated fatty acids in the extract compared to pure supercritical CO2 extract.

Alyaa Abdulhussein Alsaedi et al.

Summary: Demand for renewable lipids feedstock for biodiesel production is increasing. This study assessed the feasibility of using municipal sewage sludge as a potential feedstock. Supercritical CO2 extraction was used to extract lipids from the sludge, and the extraction process was evaluated using mathematical models. About 27% of lipids were extracted under specific conditions. The extraction process was found to be more dependent on pressure than temperature. The physicochemical properties of the extracted lipids and sewage sludge biodiesel were compared with international standards.
