Experimental Study of the Self-Potential Response Characteristics of Anisotropic Bituminous Coal during Deformation and Fracturing

Jun Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the self-potential characteristics of coal rock were measured to dynamically monitor the spatiotemporal evolution of coal rock deformation and fracturing. The results showed a good correspondence between the self-potential, stress, and acoustic emission counts during damage and fracturing. The findings highlight the importance of anisotropy in the variation of self-potential and stress, and can be applied to evaluate the stress state of coal, providing a basis for monitoring and warning of coal and rock dynamic disasters.

Experimental study on pressure stimulated current response characteristics during damage evolution of water-bearing coal samples

Tiancheng Shan et al.

Summary: The damage and rupture behavior of water-bearing coal induced by coal mining disturbance can lead to large-scale rock engineering instability and engineering geological disasters. This study investigates the influence of water on the pressure stimulated current (PSC) characteristics through uniaxial compression tests on coal samples with different water contents. The results show that water can significantly reduce the mechanical strength of coal samples and enhance the PSC peak value. The PSC signals and energy can provide valuable information for predicting fractures and AE activity.

Weak current induced by coal deformation and fracture and its response to mine seismicity in a deep underground coal mine

Dexing Li et al.

Summary: It was found that weak currents can be generated from coal and rock materials under a load. Through experiments and field tests, the response characteristics of weak currents to coal failure and mine seismicity were investigated. The results showed that the weak current increases linearly with stress and strain in the elastic deformation stage and can be used as a precursor of coal failure. The weak current measured in an underground coal mine also responds well to mine seismicity, and its continuously accelerated increase can be used as a precursor of mine seismicity.

Electric Potential Response Characteristics and Constitutive Model of Coal Under Axial Static Load-Dynamic Load Coupling

Zesheng Zang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between the electrical and magnetic signals generated by coal fracture and its mechanical properties and fracture behavior. The results show that under the coupling of axial static load-dynamic load, noticeable electrical potential (EP) signals are stimulated in coal, and the change in EP signal correlates well with the change in mechanical behavior. The study also reveals the mechanisms by which different variables affect the EP response of coal.

Mechanical response and gas flow characteristics of pre-drilled coal subjected to true triaxial stresses

Yubing Liu et al.

Summary: True triaxial experiments were conducted to study the mechanical response and gas flow characteristics of pre-drilled coal samples. The results showed that the gas flow rate of pre-drilled coal samples increased with strain, presenting an S-shaped trend. The failure mode of pre-drilled coal samples was mainly shear-type, with V-shaped macro-fractures observed when the boreholes were perpendicular to bedding planes and parallel to face cleats. The mechanical responses and flow characteristics of pre-drilled coal will provide guidance for borehole layout design and prevention of coal dynamic disasters.

Hidden Affinities Between Electric and Acoustic Activities in Brittle Materials at Near-Fracture Load Levels

D. Triantis et al.

Summary: This study investigates the time evolution of electric activity in brittle materials loaded at levels approaching catastrophic fracture and reveals hidden affinities between electric and acoustic signals. Both electric and acoustic emissions are governed by a power law in the last loading stages, indicating impending macroscopic fracture. The study also shows that both techniques provide pre-failure indicators for upcoming fracture.

Summary: This study developed an EP monitoring device to continuously monitor the response characteristics of internal EP signals in coal seams in real time. The device showed high sensitivity and accuracy in detecting EP signals and could reveal the loading state and damage degree of coal and rock specimens. Field tests demonstrated that the intensity of EP signals fluctuated during coal mining and remained stable during the maintenance stage, providing precursory information for dynamic disaster hazards.

Experimental study on mechanical properties and failure behaviour of the pre-cracked coal-rock combination

Jiangwei Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that artificial fractures weaken the mechanical properties of composite coal and accelerate the process from micro-crack to macro failure. Additionally, during the plastic stage of the specimen, there is a sharp increase in acoustic emission, while the cumulative number of micro-cracks and release energy decrease gradually, along with a decrease in the number of micro-cracks and energy released at the moment of failure. Furthermore, the crack-initiating stress for combined coal-rock specimens gradually decreases through one of three typical modes, matching with coal failure, rock-coal failure, and rock failure in the combined specimens.

Summary: The mechanical properties of fissured rock mass are closely related to the stability of geotechnical engineering. The failure mode of fissured sandstone changes from tensile to shear with the increase of the dip angle of prefabricated fissures. As the dip angle increases, there are fewer tensile microcracks but more shear microcracks in the samples.
