The interaction effect between public environmental concern and air pollution: Evidence from China

Chenyang Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interaction effect between public environmental concern and air pollution, using a spatial panel simultaneous equation approach. The results show that an increase in public environmental concern leads to a decrease in PM2.5 concentration, while an increase in PM2.5 concentration leads to an increase in public environmental concern. Moreover, there is a significant spatial spillover effect of both public environmental concern and air pollution. The findings suggest that public environmental concern reduces air pollution through promoting government environmental regulation, and air pollution promotes public environmental concern by threatening residents' health. Heterogeneity analysis reveals regional variations in the interaction effect.

Can urban polycentricity improve air quality? Evidence from Chinese cities

Will W. Qiang et al.

Summary: This study uses population grid data from 2004 to 2018 to analyze the urban polycentricity in 284 Chinese prefecture-level cities. A new method is developed to measure urban polycentricity and its effects on air pollution are investigated. The findings suggest that the distance and size difference between urban centers can reduce air pollution within the city, but a strong clustering of urban centers with significant size disparity can shift pollution to other centers. This highlights the importance of considering the spatial inequality of air pollution in relation to polycentric urban structures.

Strategic interaction in environmental regulation and sulfur dioxide emissions: Evidence from China

Penghao Wang et al.

Summary: Environmental regulation is an important tool for pollution control in China, but its effectiveness depends on the enforcement by local governments. This study finds a race to the top behavior among local governments in environmental regulation, indicating that strengthening environmental regulation can significantly reduce sulfur dioxide emissions. The reduction effect is achieved through green innovation and finance. The impact of environmental regulation on emissions varies between low-energy-consuming and high-energy-consuming regions.

The impact of green technology innovation on carbon dioxide emissions: The role of local environmental regulations

Kaiwen Chang et al.

Summary: Environmental pollution is a global issue that requires attention. Green technology innovation is seen as an effective strategy to address this issue and achieve sustainability. This study examines the impact of environmental regulation on the relationship between green innovation and CO2 emissions reduction in China, finding that regulation positively moderates the impact of green knowledge innovation on emissions reduction. Investment-based regulation is the most effective in promoting green innovation, followed by command-and-control-based regulation.

Characteristics of ambient air quality and its air quality index (AQI) model in Shanghai, China

Zexi Jiang et al.

Summary: Long-term observations suggest that while Shanghai's ambient air quality continues to improve, the combined effects of air pollutants PM2.5, O3, and NO2 are also increasing. Moderate air pollution with multiple pollutants is found to have higher concentrations of chemical components in PM2.5. Therefore, a new multi-pollutant air quality index model (NMAQI) based on four pollutants (PM2.5, SO2, NO2, and O3) is proposed, emphasizing the relationship between PM2.5, NO2, and O3. This model successfully classifies observational data into different air quality ratings and reduces the risk of public exposure to highly polluted environments.

Digital finance and air pollution in China: Evolution characteristics, impact mechanism and regional differences

Yunfeng Tang et al.

Summary: This paper empirically examines the spatial impact of digital finance on air pollution using 31 provincial panel data from China. The results show that digital finance has a significant negative direct impact and spatial spillover effect on air pollution, with the breadth of coverage having the most significant impact. The eastern region has a negative direct impact, while the central and western regions have negative spatial spillover effects.

Effects of environmental regulation on CO2 emissions: An empirical analysis of 282 cities in China

Huiping Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that environmental regulation can effectively restrain CO2 emissions in Chinese cities by promoting industrial structure upgrades and technological innovation. However, under the constraints of environmental regulation, foreign direct investment demonstrates a pollution-haven effect. Additionally, urban heterogeneity has a significant impact on the emission reduction effect of environmental regulation.

Can public participation constraints promote green technological innovation of Chinese enterprises? The moderating role of government environmental regulatory enforcement

Li Zhao et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of public participation on green technological innovation in Chinese enterprises, categorizing the constraints into dimensions of news media, community residents, and ENGOs. Results showed that constraints from news media and community residents were conducive to green technological innovation, while constraints from ENGOs had a weaker effect. Environmental regulatory enforcement played a positive moderating role in the relationship between ENGO constraints and green technological innovation.

Environmental (de)centralization and local environmental governance: Evidence from a natural experiment in China

Gao Chen et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of environmental (de)centralization on local governments' environmental governance, finding that the establishment of regional Supervision Centers for Environmental Protection significantly prompts firms to reduce emission pollution. The study also suggests that these centers facilitate information collection and supervision, leading to reduced pollutant generation and increased investment in pollution control by local firms. Moreover, they coordinate incentives on reducing firms' emissions across provincial boundaries. The study highlights the importance of effective incentive mechanisms and coordination in environmental governance.

Can the joint regional air pollution control policy achieve a win-win outcome for the environment and economy? Evidence from China

Di Zhou et al.

Summary: This study explores the environmental and economic effects of China's Joint Prevention and Control System of Regional Air Pollution (JPCSRAP) using the PSM-DID method and Chinese urban data. The findings show that JPCSRAP can achieve a win-win outcome by reducing air pollution while promoting economic growth, with the effects increasing over time. However, the effects vary across regions. The effectiveness of JPCSRAP is attributed to enhanced collaborative governance between cities, industrial structure upgrading, and technological innovation.

Is government regulation a push for corporate environmental performance? Evidence from China

Weike Zhang et al.

Summary: The Chinese government issued new ambient air quality standards in 2012 to control pollution and improve air quality. Using a quasi-natural experiment, this study examines the effect of these regulations on corporate environmental performance (CEP) using data from Chinese listed enterprises from 2008 to 2018. The findings show that the new standards significantly promote the improvement of CEP, but the effect is weakened in provinces with less regulatory enforcement and poor environmental information transparency. Additionally, the influence of the new standards decreases when enterprises are regulated by the government at a greater administrative hierarchical distance.

Less pollution under a more centralized environmental system: Evidence from vertical environmental reforms in China

Chao Han et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of environmental centralizing reforms on SO2 emissions from polluting firms in China. The findings indicate that these reforms resulted in a 10.6% reduction in SO2 emissions and a 9.6% decrease in the installation of coal boilers. Moreover, firms that play significant roles in local employment and tax revenue experienced a greater decrease in their SO2 emissions. Additionally, firms located near county borders were more affected by these reforms.

Summary: This study analyzes the effects of local environmental protection expenditure on environmental governance in China. The results show that local environmental protection expenditure can help reduce industrial pollution emissions in cities, but the governance effects vary across different city groups. Additionally, the study finds that the trans-regional governance effect of local environmental protection expenditure is more significant when dealing with pollutants with strong spillover potential.
