Does environmental management system reform improve air quality? Quasi-experimental evidence from China

The interaction effect between public environmental concern and air pollution: Evidence from China

Summary: This study investigates the interaction effect between public environmental concern and air pollution, using a spatial panel simultaneous equation approach. The results show that an increase in public environmental concern leads to a decrease in PM2.5 concentration, while an increase in PM2.5 concentration leads to an increase in public environmental concern. Moreover, there is a significant spatial spillover effect of both public environmental concern and air pollution. The findings suggest that public environmental concern reduces air pollution through promoting government environmental regulation, and air pollution promotes public environmental concern by threatening residents' health. Heterogeneity analysis reveals regional variations in the interaction effect.

Can urban polycentricity improve air quality? Evidence from Chinese cities

Summary: This study uses population grid data from 2004 to 2018 to analyze the urban polycentricity in 284 Chinese prefecture-level cities. A new method is developed to measure urban polycentricity and its effects on air pollution are investigated. The findings suggest that the distance and size difference between urban centers can reduce air pollution within the city, but a strong clustering of urban centers with significant size disparity can shift pollution to other centers. This highlights the importance of considering the spatial inequality of air pollution in relation to polycentric urban structures.

Strategic interaction in environmental regulation and sulfur dioxide emissions: Evidence from China

Characteristics of ambient air quality and its air quality index (AQI) model in Shanghai, China

Summary: Long-term observations suggest that while Shanghai's ambient air quality continues to improve, the combined effects of air pollutants PM2.5, O3, and NO2 are also increasing. Moderate air pollution with multiple pollutants is found to have higher concentrations of chemical components in PM2.5. Therefore, a new multi-pollutant air quality index model (NMAQI) based on four pollutants (PM2.5, SO2, NO2, and O3) is proposed, emphasizing the relationship between PM2.5, NO2, and O3. This model successfully classifies observational data into different air quality ratings and reduces the risk of public exposure to highly polluted environments.

Digital finance and air pollution in China: Evolution characteristics, impact mechanism and regional differences

Is government regulation a push for corporate environmental performance? Evidence from China

Summary: The Chinese government issued new ambient air quality standards in 2012 to control pollution and improve air quality. Using a quasi-natural experiment, this study examines the effect of these regulations on corporate environmental performance (CEP) using data from Chinese listed enterprises from 2008 to 2018. The findings show that the new standards significantly promote the improvement of CEP, but the effect is weakened in provinces with less regulatory enforcement and poor environmental information transparency. Additionally, the influence of the new standards decreases when enterprises are regulated by the government at a greater administrative hierarchical distance.

Less pollution under a more centralized environmental system: Evidence from vertical environmental reforms in China
