Temporomandibular disorder patients with excessive daytime sleepiness present greater pain intensity and reduced jaw function

Sleep disorders related to index and comorbid mental disorders and psychotropic drugs

Summary: This study aims to explore the moderating influence of comorbid mental disorders and the correlation between selected psychotropic drugs and sleep disorders. A retrospective cohort study design was used, and data from Deseret Mutual Benefit Administrators (DMBA) were analyzed. The results showed that approximately 11.7% of the participants filed claims for sleep disorders, with insomnia and sleep apnea being the most common. Rates of selected mental disorders ranged from schizophrenia to anxiety. The study found a positive association between mental disorders and insomnia and sleep apnea, especially when there were other comorbid mental disorders. Psychotropic drugs, particularly sedatives and psychostimulants, were associated with higher levels of insomnia and sleep apnea, especially for anxiety, depression, or bipolar disorder.

Summary: Patients with chronic temporomandibular disorder have significantly poorer sleep quality compared to healthy controls, with a higher likelihood of obstructive sleep apnea and excessive daytime sleepiness. Poor sleep quality is associated with older age, female gender, higher Epworth sleepiness scale scores, and the presence of headache attributed to temporomandibular disorder.

Management of temporomandibular disorders: a rapid review of systematic reviews and guidelines

Summary: This study conducted a rapid review of systematic reviews and guidelines published in the past 5 and 10 years, respectively, to provide evidence-based management strategies for temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The findings suggest that a multi-modal conservative approach is recommended as the initial management for TMD. For patients with poor response to conservative measures, arthrocentesis, arthroscopy, or open joint surgery can be considered. Occlusal splint therapy is not recommended due to insufficient evidence.

The association between problematic smartphone use and the severity of temporomandibular disorders: A cross-sectional study

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) symptoms and their association with problematic smartphone use (PSU) in young adults. The results showed a moderate correlation between PSU and TMD among the participants. Logistic regression analysis revealed that individuals with PSU were at a higher risk of TMD, particularly pain-related TMD.

Association between Stigma and Pain in Patients with Temporomandibular Disorders

The results showed that overall stigma and enacted stigma were significantly correlated with pain, anxiety, and depression, while felt stigma was mainly associated with anxiety and depression. Prevalence of temporomandibular joint disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the prevalence of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJD) among the general population. The overall prevalence of TMJD was approximately 31% for adults/elderly and 11% for children/adolescents, with the most prevalent TMJD being disc displacement with reduction (DDwR). Knowledge about the frequency of TMJD can encourage dentists to consider appropriate strategies for early and correct diagnosis and management.

Validity and Reliability of the Helkimo Clinical Dysfunction Index for the Diagnosis of Temporomandibular Disorders

Future studies will focus on larger cohorts and utilize PROM with a case-control setting.
