Life cycle assessment of an innovative rotating biofilm technology for microalgae production: An eco-design approach

Diego Penaranda et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the assessment and reduction of environmental impact for a breakthrough microalgal production system based on rotating biofilm. Eco-design parameters such as NH3 emission factor, fabric support properties, and electricity consumption were identified as crucial for optimizing the system. By eco-designing this new technology, the environmental impact was reduced by 25% to 88.3%. The environmental footprint of algae meal from rotating algal biofilms outperformed other production scenarios and achieved a 70.8% reduction in environmental impact compared to conventional aquafeeds.

Summary: This paper proposes a unified experimental and theoretical framework to investigate algae biofilm growth on a rotating algae biofilm reactor (RABR). It uses experimental setups to test environmental and operational factors for RABRs and develops a mathematical model guided by laboratory experimental findings. The framework is used to study the effects of RABR rotating velocity, duty cycle, and light intensity on algae biofilm growth, areal productivity, nutrient uptake efficiency, and energy efficiency in wastewater treatment.

Biomass production and astaxanthin accumulation of Haematococcus pluvialis in large-scale outdoor culture based on year-round survey: Influencing factors and physiological response

Zhuoran Teng et al.

Summary: This study found that light intensity and cumulative light intensity are the most important factors affecting the biomass production and astaxanthin accumulation in outdoor large-scale cultivation of Haematococcus. The cumulative light intensity between 550 and 850 mol photons.m(-2) was found to be optimal for a productive harvest. Other factors such as temperature, diurnal temperature difference, culture period, and initial inoculation concentration were also found to affect production performance. The study also revealed the different light requirements for green cell growth and astaxanthin accumulation in immotile cells.

Rotating Algae Biofilm Reactor for Management and Valorization of Produced Wastewater

Jonathan L. Wood et al.

Summary: This study investigates the production and enhancement of high value phycocyanin pigment from microalgae biofilms cultured on oilfield and natural gas produced wastewater. It is found that the phycocyanin content can be significantly enhanced under low light conditions without affecting the yield. Evaluation of different substrata shows that the cotton belt substratum cultivates a photosynthetic biofilm with high autotrophic activity and phycocyanin yield, making it suitable for large-scale production of phycocyanin from wastewater.

Acquisition of desiccation tolerance in Haematococcus pluvialis requires photosynthesis and coincides with lipid and astaxanthin accumulation

Thomas Roach et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the desiccation tolerance in Haematococcus pluvialis is related to the color of the cells, with red cells showing better tolerance. The mechanisms of desiccation tolerance include changes in cell ultra-structure and synthesis of astaxanthin-rich lipid bodies. The processes of acclimation to desiccation under low and high light conditions have overlapping components, such as accumulation of fatty acids, lipid bodies, and astaxanthin. Atmospheric exposure alone can trigger acclimation to desiccation, and photosynthesis powers this process, but high light stress and dehydration are not strictly necessary.
