The Effects of Victimization on Offending: An Examination of General Strain Theory, Criminal Propensity, Risk, Protection, and Resilience

Victimization, negative emotions, and substance use: Variability in general strain theory processes by marriage and relationship quality

Summary: General strain theory suggests that individuals may engage in deviant behavior to cope with negative emotions, but this theory has received mixed support and lacks consideration of important factors such as marital status and relationship quality. Using data from Add Health, this study examines the mediation of negative emotions in the relationship between victimization and recent substance use, as well as the moderation effects of marital status. Results support general strain theory by showing that negative emotions mediate the relationship between victimization and substance use, and the mediation is moderated by marital status.

Do Negative Emotions Matter? Paths From Victimization to Cyber and Traditional Bullying From a General Strain Theory Perspective

The Converging Effects of Psychopathic Traits and Victimization on Offending: A Partial Test of Agnew's Extension of General Strain Theory

Summary: This study examines the combined effects of psychopathic traits and victimization on criminal behavior using cross-lagged dynamic panel models. The results demonstrate the independent impacts of psychopathic traits and victimization on criminal coping, as well as the interactive effects of both factors on offending. These findings emphasize the importance of criminal propensity and criminal victimization in criminal coping.
