The Effects of Victimization on Offending: An Examination of General Strain Theory, Criminal Propensity, Risk, Protection, and Resilience

Mackenzie Kushner et al.

Summary: General strain theory suggests that individuals with multiple risk factors are more likely to engage in criminal behavior as a coping mechanism. However, this study found that greater risk weakened the relationship between victimization and offending, while greater protection strengthened this relationship.

Victimization, negative emotions, and substance use: Variability in general strain theory processes by marriage and relationship quality

Gregory C. Rocheleau et al.

Summary: General strain theory suggests that individuals may engage in deviant behavior to cope with negative emotions, but this theory has received mixed support and lacks consideration of important factors such as marital status and relationship quality. Using data from Add Health, this study examines the mediation of negative emotions in the relationship between victimization and recent substance use, as well as the moderation effects of marital status. Results support general strain theory by showing that negative emotions mediate the relationship between victimization and substance use, and the mediation is moderated by marital status.

The Converging Effects of Psychopathic Traits and Victimization on Offending: A Partial Test of Agnew's Extension of General Strain Theory

Yeungjeom Lee et al.

Summary: This study examines the combined effects of psychopathic traits and victimization on criminal behavior using cross-lagged dynamic panel models. The results demonstrate the independent impacts of psychopathic traits and victimization on criminal coping, as well as the interactive effects of both factors on offending. These findings emphasize the importance of criminal propensity and criminal victimization in criminal coping.

A Robust Bootstrap Test for Mediation Analysis

Andreas Alfons et al.

Summary: Mediation analysis is crucial in organizational sciences, but traditional linear regression analysis based on normal-theory maximum likelihood estimators is sensitive to deviations from normality assumptions. To address this issue, a robust mediation method has been developed, which demonstrates superior estimation of effect size and reliability in assessing significance, along with freely available software for empirical researchers.
