Audio-visual input for learning L2 vocabulary and grammatical constructions

Carmen Munoz et al.

Summary: This article explores the benefits of audio-visual input for learning a second language, focusing on the role of frequency, subtitles and captions, and learner proficiency. Two longitudinal studies were conducted, which found significant correlations between language gains and input frequency. It was also discovered that the effect of frequency depends on the type of support provided by on-screen text. Furthermore, captions were found to have a significant advantage for grammar acquisition compared to no captions, while there was no significant advantage of subtitles or captions for vocabulary learning at lower proficiency levels.

Applied linguistics communities of practice: Improving the research-practice relationship

Anna Becker

Summary: This study introduces the concept of practice-based research and advocates the establishment of applied linguistics communities of practice (CoPs) as a capacity-building space for researchers and practitioners to exchange ideas and collaborate meaningfully. The gap between research and practice in the field of applied linguistics is recognized as a pressing issue, and the study examines the identity negotiation and experiences of practice-oriented researchers through in-depth interviews conducted in various country contexts. The findings indicate that even committed practice-oriented researchers perceive the research-practice relationship as problematic and call for improvements in conducting ethically responsible and sustainable practice-based research. The study proposes a practice-based research cycle as a template for joint projects, involving both practitioners and researchers in all stages, while leveraging the strengths and mutual learning experiences of the CoP members.

'May I do something for you?': The effects of audio-visual material (captioned and non-captioned) on EFL pragmatic learning

Julia Baron et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of audio-visual materials on second language pragmatic learning in the foreign language classroom. The findings suggest that regardless of the presence of captions, exposure to audio-visual materials prompts learners to use more polite strategies, and captions have a positive effect on the learning of pragmatic appropriateness.

Multimodal reading and second language learning

Ana Pellicer-Sanchez

Summary: This paper provides a review of research on multimodal reading, focusing on attentional processing. It first introduces theoretical frameworks and empirical evidence supporting the use of pictures in reading. It then reviews studies on the processing of text and pictures in both first and second language contexts. The discussion aims to advance research on multimodal reading in a second language by identifying gaps in current research and suggesting future directions.

HOW DOES MODE OF INPUT AFFECT THE INCIDENTAL LEARNING OF COLLOCATIONS?

Stuart Webb et al.

Summary: The study found that reading while listening was the most effective mode, with reading and listening conditions leading to similar gains. This suggests that listening may play a more important role in learning collocations compared to single-word items.
