Factors influencing the cariogenic potential of oral nutritional supplements indicated for use in adults with or at risk of malnutrition

Agnieszka M. Frydrych et al.

Summary: This study examined the cariogenic potential of oral nutritional supplements (ONS) available in Australia. It found that there is significant variation in the cariogenicity of ONS. Recognizing the potential for tooth decay associated with ONS use is important for making informed decisions and implementing caries preventive protocols in individuals with significant caries risk.

Cariogenic potential of oral nutritional supplements measured by intraoral plaque pH telemetry

Angela Stillhart et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the cariogenic potentials of oral nutritional supplements (ONS) on enamel using intraoral plaque telemetry. Results showed that all ten ONS tested were potentially cariogenic, with differences in cariogenicity between products. It was found that ONS with high protein content had lower cariogenicity, while factors such as flavor, consistency, and fiber content did not significantly influence cariogenic potential.
