Current perspectives of residual ridge resorption: Pathological activation of oral barrier osteoclasts

Takeru Kondo et al.

Summary: Tooth extraction is a last resort treatment for resolving pathological complications of dentition induced by infection and injury. Although the extraction wound generally heals uneventfully, resulting in the formation of an edentulous residual ridge, some patients experience long-term and severe residual ridge reduction. The objective of this review was to provide a contemporary understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms that may potentially cause edentulous jawbone resorption.

Comparison of Low and High Temperature Sintering for Processing of Bovine Bone as Block Grafts for Oral Use: A Biological and Mechanical In Vitro Study

Asrar Elahi et al.

Summary: Large oral bone defects require robust and biocompatible bone grafts. Bovine bone is a commonly used xenograft material, but its manufacturing process affects its mechanical strength and biocompatibility. This study assessed bovine bone blocks at different sintering temperatures to determine their effects on mechanical properties and biocompatibility.

Accelerating Socket Repair via WNT3A Curtails Alveolar Ridge Resorption

M. Arioka et al.

Summary: Research shows a correlation between the rate of socket healing and the number of Wnt-responsive osteoprogenitor cells and their progeny, with delivery of WNT3A to extraction sockets in osteoporotic animals accelerating socket repair. This study provides new insights into enhancing socket repair with WNT3A post tooth extraction to preserve alveolar ridge dimensions.

The effect of extracellular matrix remodeling on material-based strategies for bone regeneration: Review article

Roya Fattahi et al.

Summary: Bone defects can be caused by acquired or inherited disorders. Tissue engineering strategies aim to regenerate functional bone by incorporating biomaterials and cells, providing a personalized treatment option with reduced rejection risk. The design of appropriate scaffolds is critical to create a microenvironment for cell growth. Various natural and synthetic polymers have been studied to form osteoconductive scaffolds with ceramic and metallic materials. Mimicking the bone extracellular matrix (ECM) is important for obtaining a supporting structure with suitable mechanical and surface properties. ECM remodeling plays a crucial role in regulating cell behavior and the functional properties of mature bone.

Effects of Channels and Micropores in Honeycomb Scaffolds on the Reconstruction of Segmental Bone Defects

Keigo Shibahara et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of different channel and micropore volumes in carbonate apatite honeycomb (HC) scaffolds on bone reconstruction. Channels were found to affect early bone ingrowth, while micropores affected scaffold resorption and bone formation. Additionally, scaffolds with large volumes of both channels and micropores formed a significantly larger amount of new bone, thereby bridging the host bone stumps.

Patient-reported outcome measures following soft-tissue grafting at implant sites: A systematic review

Martina Stefanini et al.

Summary: Soft tissue grafting at implant sites can improve patient satisfaction and aesthetic evaluation. Most studies found similar outcomes in terms of post-operative morbidity, painkillers intake, quality of life, aesthetic assessment, and satisfaction between autogenous grafts and substitutes, with a trend towards lower post-operative discomfort observed for graft substitutes.

Recent advances on the mechanisms of kidney stone formation (Review)

Zhu Wang et al.

Summary: Kidney stone disease is one of the oldest known diseases in medicine, with unclear mechanisms of formation and development. Recent technological advances have led to the development of various theories and strategies in surgical management of kidney stones. Observations suggest five main mechanisms for kidney stone formation: urinary supersaturation, Randall's plaques, sex hormones, microbiome, and immune response, providing opportunities for novel research and understanding in urology and nephrology.
