Melatonin ultrastructural localization in mitochondria of human salivary glands

Raffaella Isola et al.

Summary: The production and distribution of melatonin have been observed not only in the pineal gland and enterochromaffin cells but also in the mitochondria of human salivary glands. This study provides an ultrastructural report on the presence of melatonin in the mitochondria of major salivary glands and highlights the need for further research on the localization of melatonin in this organelle.

Synergic Action of Insulin-like Growth Factor-2 and miRNA-483 in Pterygium Pathogenesis

Cristina Maxia et al.

Summary: Pterygium is a multifactorial disease, with UV-B speculated to play a key role. This study investigated the overexpression of IGF-2, IGF-1R, and miR-483 in pterygium samples and found intense co-expression of IGF-2 and IGF-1R in the epithelial tissue. The study also demonstrated upregulation of IGF2 and miR-483 in pterygium.
