The contribution of historical processes to contemporary extinction risk in placental mammals

Aryn P. Wilder et al.

Summary: Species persistence can be affected by the diversity across the genome, with historical effective population size (Ne) playing a crucial role. This study analyzed genetic variation in 240 mammal genomes to investigate the impact of historical Ne on heterozygosity, deleterious genetic load, and extinction risk. The findings indicate that species with smaller historical Ne carry a greater burden of deleterious alleles and have a higher risk of extinction. Genomic data can be used as a predictive tool for conservation status assessment when other census or ecological data are lacking.

Evolutionary genomics of oceanic island radiations

Jose Cerca et al.

Summary: A recurring feature of oceanic archipelagos is the presence of adaptive radiations that generate endemic, species-rich clades. Recent developments in evolutionary genomics have contributed towards solving questions at this interface. However, most of these radiations have not yet been investigated from an evolutionary genomics perspective, revealing gaps in knowledge related to implementation of genomic approaches, as well as undersampled taxonomic and geographic areas.

Explosive volcanism of Piton des Neiges (Reunion Island) and excess age dispersion in sanidine: Insights into magma chamber processes in a hotspot setting

Maria Paula Castellanos Melendez et al.

Summary: Explosive eruptions of trachytic to trachyandesitic composition occurred at Piton des Neiges, resulting in thick pyroclastic deposits. High-resolution 40Ar/39Ar dating and petrochemical analysis indicate a single large-volume eruption followed by smaller silicic eruptions. The complex eruptive history suggests the potential for future hazardous eruptions from this volcano.

Legacy of supervolcanic eruptions on population genetic structure of brown kiwi

Jordan B. Bemmels et al.

Summary: Supervolcanoes are capable of emitting mega-colossal eruptions, with the most recent example being the Oruanui eruption of the Taupo supervolcano in New Zealand. These eruptions have significant impacts on habitats and population extinctions. This study focuses on the genetic structure of brown kiwi and finds that the eruptions of the Taupo supervolcano played a major role in reshaping the population differentiation and genetic diversity of the species.

The evolution of ageing in cooperative breeders

Jan J. Kreider et al.

Summary: Cooperatively breeding animals have longer lifespans because the onset of senescence is delayed and there is lower competition for breeding among group members. Additionally, lower genetic relatedness among group members leads to the evolution of longer lifespans due to weaker selection against higher mortality.

Long-term cloud forest response to climate warming revealed by insect speciation history

Antonia Salces-Castellano et al.

Summary: Montane cloud forests are highly endemic areas and vulnerable terrestrial ecosystems to climate change. Understanding how they contribute to biodiversity and respond to climate change is important. Genomic data is a rich source of information to further understand the origin of montane cloud forest biodiversity and its potential impacts from ongoing climate change.

Summary: This study confirms that island species have lower census population sizes and effective population sizes, resulting in lower nucleotide diversity in coding regions, higher ratios of non-synonymous to synonymous polymorphisms, and lower adaptive substitution rates.

Genomic variation, population history and within-archipelago adaptation between island bird populations

Claudia A. Martin et al.

Summary: Oceanic island archipelagos offer valuable insights into evolutionary processes, with interactions between colonization events, gene flow, and selection shaping genetic variation at different spatial scales. Within the same geographical region, similar ecological factors may repeatedly drive selection between populations.
