Two Forms of Social Inequality in Students' Socio-Emotional Skills: Do the Levels of Big Five Personality Traits and Their Associations With Academic Achievement Depend on Parental Socioeconomic Status?

Clemens M. Lechner et al.

Summary: The study found that social inequality in socio-emotional skills is generally limited, especially when compared with inequalities related to cognitive skills and gender. Intergenerational Transmission of Educational Attainment: How Important Are Children's Personality Characteristics?

Anne Christine Holtmann et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that educational aspirations play a crucial role in intergenerational educational transmission, while personality characteristics do not act as mediators. Cognitive skills are strong mediators, showing weak moderation effects in favor of privileged children. This German study highlights similarities and differences compared to previous research in the U.S. and U.K., prompting a reevaluation of the importance of personality traits and cognitive skills in intergenerational educational attainment.

Carlos J. Gil-Hernandez

Summary: The study found that even when skills are equal, high-SES students are more likely to attend the academic track compared to low-SES peers, especially when cognitive performance is weak. Additionally, cognitively weak students from high-SES families receive higher educational returns to conscientiousness than high cognitive performers or low-SES peers.

Peer Social Acceptance and Academic Achievement: A Meta-Analytic Study

Kathryn R. Wentzel et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis of 72 studies to investigate the link between peer social acceptance and academic achievement, finding a significant and positive relationship. Moderator effects indicated that this relationship was stronger for younger students and students from Asian countries, as well as for classroom-based assessments. The study also suggested that academic self-beliefs, negative affect, and active engagement partially mediate the relationship between social acceptance and academic performance.

Students' Occupational Aspirations: Can Family Relationships Account for Differences Between Immigrant and Socioeconomic Groups?

Stephanie M. Plenty et al.

Summary: Immigrant background and disadvantaged socioeconomic background are key predictors of poorer school achievement in Europe. However, family relationships, specifically parental aspirations, play a significant role in mediating the effects of family background on students' occupational aspirations. Family cohesion and parental monitoring also contribute to students' aspirations, especially for those from non-European backgrounds and with higher parental occupational status.
