Synthesis, microstructure and electromagnetic properties of Hf-based SiBCN ceramics

Min Zhang et al.

Summary: Polyborosilazane and polyhafnoxane were mixed and cured to obtain Hf-based SiBCN ceramics. The precursors underwent cross-linking reaction during the curing process, resulting in the increase of crystallization temperature and the formation of new components during pyrolysis. The dielectric constant and absorption properties of the ceramics were influenced by the pyrolysis temperature.

Polymer precursor synthesis of novel ZrC-SiC ultrahigh-temperature ceramics and modulation of their molecular structure

Shibin Wu et al.

Summary: ZrC-SiC composite ceramics with varying Zr/Si molar ratios were prepared using sol-gel method. The composites were characterized by various techniques including FT-IR, XRD, TGA, TEM, SEM, Raman spectroscopy, and EDS. The results showed the formation of a macromolecular network structure in the composites, with Zr atoms crosslinked with Si in corresponding proportion. After annealing, ZrC powder uniformly covered the surface of SiC ceramics, with high-crystallinity graphite carbon covering the ZrC powder.

Pyrolysis process for boron nitride fiber derived from tris(methylamino)borane: Evolution of the molecular structure

Zhiguang Wang et al.

Summary: In order to investigate the structural evolution of tris(methylamino)borane during the thermal-treating process, polymeric green fiber is cured and treated in different temperatures. The composition and structure of volatile compounds and residual products are analyzed during the pyrolysis process. It is found that oxygen can be used to rapidly cure the fiber while maintaining its tensile strength. The evolution of molecular structure during the pyrolysis process is determined.

Ultra-high temperature resistance of one-dimensional hafnium carbide wrapped with pyrolytic carbon up to 2450 °C

Yanqin Fu et al.

Summary: The research found that HfC nanowires with a diameter of 200-300 nm could maintain their morphological and structural stability at 2100 degrees Celsius, and the pyrolytic carbon improved their stability under high temperature conditions. This work not only provides a theoretical basis for HfC nanowires reinforced carbon or ceramic-based composites, but also raises deep considerations on the stability of nanomaterials under ultra-high temperature conditions.

Preparation of HfC-SiC ultra-high-temperature ceramics by the copolycondensation of HfC and SiC precursors

Xiaozhou Wang et al.

Summary: Ultra-high-temperature ceramics have excellent resistance and oxidation at high temperatures, and a HfC-SiC precursor (PHCS) was successfully synthesized in this study. The composition, structure, and properties of the PHCS precursor and its pyrolysis products were analyzed, demonstrating that the PHCS precursor is an ideal raw material for the fabrication of ultra-high-temperature ceramics.

Enhanced Mechanical Properties and Oxidation Resistance of Zirconium Diboride Ceramics via Grain-Refining and Dislocation Regulation

Haiyue Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, fully dense and grain-refined ZrB2 material with excellent mechanical and oxidation-resistant properties is prepared under ultra-high pressure at low temperature. The refined grains, substructures, and high dislocation density contribute to the enhancement of mechanical properties. The unique structure of ZrB2 leads to a significant increase in oxidation threshold temperature.

Synthesis of a meltable polyzirconosilane precursor for SiZrNC multinary ceramics

Qiang Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, a stepwise synthesis of polyzirconosilane (PZCS) with Zr-C-Si-N polymeric chain was proposed. The reaction mechanism was discussed based on the frontier molecular orbital theory and atom transfer radical polymerization. The PZCS precursor exhibited excellent soluble and meltable properties and could be spun into fibers using melt spinning technique. The ceramization process of PZCS resulted in the formation of SiZrNC multinary ceramics.

Single-source-precursor synthesis and high-temperature evolution of a boron-containing SiC/HfC ceramic nano/micro composite

Qingbo Wen et al.

Summary: An amorphous ceramic containing boron, SiHfC(N,O), was synthesized through pyrolysis of a single-source precursor in Ar atmosphere at 1000 degrees C. High-temperature annealing resulted in the formation of HfCxN1-x nanoparticles and beta-SiC crystallization, with the eventual generation of HfB2 at temperatures beyond 1900 degrees C. The addition of boron increased the sintering activity of SiHfC(N,O) and led to the production of dense materials with improved mechanical properties compared to boron-free SiC/HfC.

Effects of milling time and reductant content on the formation of HfC-HfB2 composite powders synthesized via a solid-state reaction route

Emre Tekoglu et al.

Summary: A solid-state reaction route combining HEBM and annealing was used to synthesize HfC-HfB2 composite powders in this study. The effects of HEBM duration and excess reductant amount on the reaction mechanism and product phases were investigated. XRD analysis showed that the content of HfC phase increased while the content of HfO2 phase decreased with longer milling duration and higher reductant amounts.

HfN Formation and Phase Relationships in the Hf-Si-La-O-N System

Liu Yang et al.

Summary: The study explored the feasibility of synthesizing HfN composite lanthanum silicate ceramics and investigated the relationship between reaction pathways in the HfO2-Si3N4 binary system and Hf-Si-La-O-N ternary system. The introduction of La2O3 promoted the formation of HfN which helped reduce the burning loss rate of ceramics. Experimental phase diagrams were proposed for both the HfO2-SiO2-La2O3 ternary system and the Hf-Si-La-O-N system.
