Effect of N2/CO2 injection and alternate injection on volume swelling/shrinkage strain of coal

Zhenzhi Wang et al.

Summary: By conducting experiments on four coal samples with different CH4 saturations, the change of coal strain during N2/CO2-ECBM was studied. The results show that the adsorption swelling rate decreases with increasing saturation, and the order of swelling rate is CO2 > N2 > CH4. The ratio of strain induced by CO2, CH4, and N2 adsorption is approximately 9.52 : 4.05 : 1. During N2-ECBM, the volume shrinkage strain caused by nitrogen injection increases with the increase of methane saturation, and the shrinkage percentage follows the order of medium- > low- > high-rank coal. Replacing injected N2 with CO2 reduces the swelling strain rate compared to CH4 adsorption. In the process of desorption with stepwise depressurization, the strain rate in N2-ECBM follows the order of test 2 < test 3 < test 4, but there is no obvious regularity in CO2-ECBM. The application of CO2-ECBM is more effective in high-rank coal reservoirs. CO2/N2 alternate injection method can improve the injectability of CO2, especially in high-rank coal.

Effect of CO2 injection on CH4 desorption rate in poor permeability coal seams: An experimental study

Gang Bai et al.

Summary: Injecting CO2 into coal seams is an effective way to increase methane recovery. Research shows that when the CO2 injection amount is below the critical value, the desorption amount of CH4, CO2 storage, and gas content all increase; when the injection amount exceeds the critical value, all parameters except for the CH4 desorption amount increase.

N2 injection to enhance coal seam gas drainage (N2-ECGD): Insights from underground field trial investigation

Xin Yang et al.

Summary: This study conducted exploratory tests of N-2-ECGD in underground low-gas coal seams, finding that continuous N-2 injection can promote the desorption of CH4 in the coal pores. Field trials showed an EPI of 0.45 MPa, with a significant increase in gas flow rate after N-2 injection, while the CH4 concentration decreased but the CH4 flow rate remained high.

Summary: The permeability of deep coal reservoirs in coalbed methane extraction is affected by temperature and pore pressure. This study explores the permeability evolution during CBM production under different temperatures and establishes a coupling coal permeability function. The results show the sensitivity of coal reservoir permeability to stress and temperature, and provide guidance for reasonable drainage of CBM wells in different geothermal fields.

Experimental Study of Desorption and Seepage Characteristics of Single Gas and CO2-CH4 Gas Mixture in Coal

Beichen Yu et al.

Summary: Understanding the desorption and seepage behaviors of CO2 and CO2-CH4 gas mixture in coal is crucial for CO2 geological sequestration and enhanced coalbed methane recovery. Experimental results showed that the permeability of coal to CO2 increased with pore pressure, while decreased with sigma(1) and sigma(3). CO2 desorption increased with pore pressure and the Dubinin-Astakhov model captured the desorption behavior accurately. The seepage volume of CO2 was significantly larger than the desorption volume. For the CO2-CH4 gas mixture, the seepage volume decreased exponentially over time, while the desorption volume increased exponentially. Regardless of seepage or desorption tests, the concentration of CH4 in the gas mixture was always higher than that of CO2.

Study on the Response Characteristics of the Pressure and Temperature Fields of Source Gas Injection under Loading Conditions

Kan Zhou et al.

Summary: The pressure and temperature field variation characteristics of the source gas in coal seams after gas injection displacement were studied using experimental research, numerical simulation, and theoretical analysis methods. The results showed that the gas pressure and temperature generally exhibited a decreasing trend in the coal, with only slight increases in some areas due to pore closure and frictional heat generation. Based on the numerical simulation results, the pressure inside the coal body decreased by approximately 0.25 MPa and the overall temperature slightly decreased during the loading process. The possibility of inducing outbursts was low under the condition of stress concentration.

Summary: The study found that CO2 and N-2 primarily displace methane gas by occupying adsorption sites, leading to a lower total energy in the CH4-CO2 model. With an increase in temperature, the concentration and motion velocity of CH4 in the vacuum layer increased, with a reduction in the diffusion activation energy of CH4 in different models by 20.53% under conditions of injecting CO2.
